Riley woke up the next morning feeling both a sense of relief and an undercurrent of unease. The confrontation with her father had left a permanent mark on her, but she didn’t regret standing up for Jax. She was determined to show everyone that what they had was real and worth fighting for.
Jax, however, was a different story. She noticed how quiet he had become since the incident, his usual spark dimmed. He smiled at her and held her hand, but Riley could see the weight he carried—a mixture of guilt and doubt.
The tension between them came to a head that evening when Jax showed up at her apartment with an unfamiliar seriousness in his eyes.
“Riley, can we talk?” he asked, his voice calm but hesitant.
“Of course,” she said, gesturing for him to sit beside her on the couch.
He didn’t sit. Instead, he began pacing, running his fingers through his hair in frustration. “I’ve been thinking about what your dad said… and maybe he’s right.”
Riley’s chest tightened. “What? Jax, no. Don’t let him get in your head. He doesn’t know us.”
“But maybe he doesn’t need to,” Jax said, stopping to face her. “Riley, this isn’t just about us. This is about the world we live in. No matter how much we love each other, there will always be people who look down on us. People like your father. How long can we keep fighting them before it tears us apart?”
Riley stood, anger and desperation bubbling to the surface. “I don’t care what the world thinks! I care about you, Jax. Don’t you see that?”
“I do,” he said softly, his voice breaking. “And that’s what scares me. I don’t want to be the reason you lose your family, your reputation, or your peace of mind. I don’t want you to wake up one day and regret choosing me.”
She stepped closer, gripping his hands tightly. “Jax, I would never regret choosing you. You’re the only thing in my life that feels right. Don’t let fear ruin what we have.”
He looked at her, torn between his feelings and his fears. “I just… I don’t know if I’m strong enough for this.”
“You are,” Riley said, her voice firm. “You’re stronger than you think, Jax. And if you’re not, I’ll be strong enough for both of us. But you have to trust me. Trust us.”
Jax’s eyes filled with unshed tears, and he pulled her into a tight embrace. “I don’t want to lose you, Riley. I’m just so scared of everything falling apart.”
“Then let’s hold it together,” she whispered, her voice trembling with emotion. “We can do this, Jax. Together.”
The Turning Point
Over the next few days, Riley and Jax began actively working to build a stronger foundation for their relationship. Riley became even more vocal about her feelings for Jax, refusing to let anyone’s opinions influence her. She started bringing him to social events and introducing him as her partner, despite the whispers and raised eyebrows.
Meanwhile, Jax focused on proving to himself that he belonged in Riley’s world. He began opening up about his dreams and ambitions, something he had always kept private. Riley encouraged him to pursue them, offering her support and resources to help him succeed.
One evening, Jax surprised Riley by taking her to a small gallery opening. He had been working with an artist friend to showcase his designs for eco-friendly fashion—a passion he had never shared with anyone before.
Riley was blown away as she walked through the gallery, admiring the intricate designs and the thoughtfulness behind each piece. “Jax, these are incredible,” she said, turning to him with pride in her eyes. “Why didn’t you tell me you were doing this?”
He shrugged, a shy smile tugging at his lips. “I didn’t think it was worth mentioning. I mean, it’s just a side project.”
“It’s not just a side project,” Riley said, taking his hand. “It’s a part of you. And it’s amazing.”
For the first time, Jax felt truly seen—not as an omega, not as someone weaker or lesser, but as an equal.
The Storm Before the Calm
Their happiness, however, was short-lived. One evening, Riley received an anonymous tip that her father was planning to sabotage Jax’s work by discrediting him publicly. Enraged, she confronted her father in his office the next day.
“You can’t control my life, Dad,” she said, her voice cold and unyielding. “And you definitely can’t hurt Jax. If you do, I swear, I’ll make sure you regret it.”
Her father looked at her, unflinching. “Riley, you’re making a mistake. That boy is going to drag you down, and you’re too blind to see it. I’m only trying to protect you.”
“I don’t need your protection,” she snapped. “What I need is for you to stay out of my business. Jax isn’t dragging me down—he’s lifting me up. Something you’ve never been able to do.”
The confrontation left Riley shaken, but it also solidified her resolve. She knew the road ahead wouldn’t be easy, but she was determined to stand by Jax no matter what.
Back at her apartment, she found Jax waiting for her, a worried look on his face.
“What happened?” he asked as she walked in.
Riley gave him a weary smile and pulled him into a hug. “Nothing we can’t handle. As long as we’re together.”
Jax held her tightly, his fear easing as he felt the strength of her resolve. “Together,” he echoed, his voice filled with hope.
For the first time in weeks, Jax believed that maybe, just maybe, they could weather the storm. Because with Riley by his side, anything felt possible.
