After a few moments, I steadied myself and went back downstairs. My father was still at the table, sipping his tea and glancing over the newspaper, though he looked up as I approached. I took a deep breath. It wasn't like Arsh and I hadn't gone out together before, but this time felt different, special, and a little bit nerve-wracking. And I'd never really asked for permission for an official date.

"Baba, um… Arsh is taking me out tonight. It's… a date." Clearing my throat, I spoke up.

He paused mid-sip, eyebrows lifting just slightly, a flicker of hesitation crossing his face.

"A date, hmm?" His voice was calm, though I could see the cautious look in his eyes. "He'll be picking you up, then?"

"Yes." I replied, nodding quickly. "He'll come to the door, around 8. And it's… it's somewhere nice, I think. I mean, I don't know exactly, but-"

He put down his cup, folding his hands and giving me that soft yet serious look only a father could manage. "Mishka, you know, I worry about you. It's my job as your baba. But… I also know Arsh cares deeply about you."

A small, grateful smile crept onto my face. I could feel my father's concern, his hesitation. It was understandable, with his schedule, he hadn't always been around, but he tried to make up for it in little ways, like this, being cautious, double-checking that everything was safe.

"I know, Baba. And I promise, Arsh will take care of me. He always does." I said, feeling a strange sense of relief just saying it out loud.

My father sighed, nodding slowly.

"Alright, Mishka. I trust you and I trust that Arsh will be responsible. Just be careful, okay?"

"Thank you, Baba. I'll be fine." I reached over, giving his hand a reassuring squeeze.

He offered me a small, reluctant smile. "Then go and enjoy, Mishka. And be safe."

With that, a weight lifted from my shoulders. The knowledge that Baba was on board, even if only hesitantly, made me feel lighter.

Later in the day, as I finished tidying up the kitchen, I heard my father's phone ring in the living room. He answered, his voice shifting into the familiar tone he used when speaking to his colleagues, filled with focus and professionalism.

I didn't have to wait long to hear what the call was about. He walked back into the kitchen, placing a gentle hand on my shoulder.

"There's an emergency surgery I have to attend at the hospital, beta." He said softly, his face a mix of apology and resolve.

"Oh, Baba." I tried to keep the disappointment out of my voice, but I couldn't help it. We had just been talking about spending more time together, and now, here he was, off to save lives, as always.

He gave me a small smile, reading my thoughts. "I know, Mishka. And I'm sorry, but this is… well, it's what I do. I'll be back as soon as I can. Promise."

I forced a smile, understanding. "Of course, Baba. You're amazing at what you do. Go… they need you."

He nodded, relieved, and gave me a warm hug. "You be safe tonight, alright? And remember, I'm just a call away if you need me, no matter what time it is."

"I will. Don't worry about me." I assured him, though I felt a pang of sadness watching him prepare to leave once again.

As he stepped toward the door, he turned back one last time, his eyes filled with a gentle pride that made my chest tighten. "Have a wonderful evening with Arsh, beta."
