She didn't speak.
She didn't protest.
She simply nodded.
That one, small movement-barely visible in the dim light-was all it took to loosen the tight knot choking my chest.
I reached for her hand instantly, wrapping my fingers around hers like it was the only anchor keeping me from drowning. Warm. Soft. Willing.
Without a word, she got out of bed. Her feet barely made a sound on the cold floor, but her presence beside me was loud enough to quiet every demon in my head.
I didn't look back as I led her out, our fingers laced tightly. I couldn't risk letting go. Not even for a second. As if if I did, the shadows in my mind would snatch her away.
The streets were dead silent. The city asleep. But my mind raced, heart thudding with a thousand things I couldn't say aloud. She didn't ask questions. Not even once. She just walked beside me, barefoot and quiet, like she knew I needed her in that exact way.
Like she felt the madness in me rising-and still chose to come.
The gates to the mansion opened with a groan. The guards didn't stop us. They knew better. The house was dark, still, bathed in shadows, but I didn't turn on a single light. I didn't need it. I knew this place by heart. Just like I knew her.
Our steps echoed through the hallway, but I never let go of her hand.
Up the stairs.
Down the corridor.
To my room.
I pushed the door open and pulled her in with me, gently, carefully, as though she were made of something more fragile than glass. She didn't resist. She didn't question.
She just followed.
The room was dim, only the soft glow from the moon spilling through the large windows. I turned to face her, still holding her hand, still not ready to let it go.
She looked around, uncertain, hesitant-but her eyes found mine again.
"What now?" she whispered.
I reached out with my free hand and tucked a strand of hair behind her ear, my thumb grazing her cheek.
"You just stay," I murmured. "That's all. Just... stay here. With me. Tonight."
Her lips parted, as if to ask why, as if to say something gentle-but no words came. She nodded again.
I led her to the bed, still fully clothed. I didn't want her body tonight.
I wanted her presence.
I wanted the silence that only she could make feel like peace.
I slipped onto the bed and gently tugged her down beside me. Her body was warm against mine as she settled in. I wrapped an arm around her waist, pulling her close-closer than I ever had before.
She laid her head on my chest, listening to the erratic rhythm of my heart. It was the only sound in the room.
I closed my eyes and inhaled deeply, the scent of her hair pulling me back from the edge I had been standing on all night.
And in that moment-drunk, broken, possessive, obsessed-I found a slice of stillness.
A slice of her.
And for tonight... it was enough.
