Issei was slumped over the lunch table, his mind still racing with confusion over the events that had unfolded over the weekend. The memory of Yuuma—Raynare, he reminded himself—kept nagging at him, but it was as if a fog had settled over his mind, making everything feel distant and unclear. Had it all really happened? Was it all some strange dream or hallucination?
Matsuda and Motohama, his two best friends, were sitting across from him, happily digging into their bento boxes. It was just like any other day, but to Issei, everything felt off.
"So, you guys really don't remember that girl, Yuuma?" Issei asked, trying to sound casual, though his voice betrayed his confusion.
Matsuda paused mid-bite and blinked. "Yuuma? Who's that?" he asked, sounding genuinely puzzled.
Issei frowned. He couldn't understand why they didn't remember her at all. She was so vivid in his mind. "You know, the girl I spent Sunday with... she was cute, long black hair, and she asked me out on a date."
Motohama let out a short laugh as he adjusted his glasses. "Dude, you seriously gonna make up a whole date with some random girl?" He gave Issei a teasing grin. "We were with you all week, and I didn't see any new girl, let alone one who'd want to go out with you."
Matsuda snickered as well, leaning back in his chair. "Yeah, man, you sure it wasn't just a dream or something? Maybe you bumped your head on a desk too hard, and now you're imagining things. If a cute girl really asked you out, we'd have been the first ones to hear about it."
Issei sighed, rubbing his temples in frustration. He didn't dream it! But trying to convince them of that was impossible, especially with how relaxed and carefree his friends were acting. He didn't want to tell them about the darker parts of the encounter either. The truth was way too dangerous for them to know—if he even fully understood it himself.
"I swear she was real!" Issei insisted, though he was starting to feel a bit self-conscious. "She was a real girl, and she said she was into me!"
Matsuda leaned over to Motohama, whispering loudly enough for Issei to hear. "Man, I think he's starting to lose it. Is this what happens when you don't get any action for a while? You start imagining girls asking you out?"
Motohama laughed, shaking his head. "Seriously, Issei, I don't know how you do it. You've got this whole fantasy world going on in your head." He gave Issei a playful nudge. "You sure you're not just talking about one of your wet dreams or something?"
Issei's face turned bright red at the suggestion, and he flailed his hands in front of him. "No! It wasn't like that!"
Matsuda grinned widely, obviously enjoying his friend's discomfort. "Ha! Sure, sure, Issei. You keep telling yourself that. I mean, it's totally believable that a gorgeous girl would just show up and ask you out of the blue."
"I'm serious!" Issei said, leaning forward, trying to get them to take him seriously. But they both just stared back at him with that same, knowing grin.
"Whatever, man," Motohama said with a laugh, shrugging. "You know how it is. One minute, you think a girl likes you, and the next, you're imagining things. We've all been there. Maybe next time, try to get her phone number first."
Issei huffed, feeling more frustrated than ever. His two friends were teasing him, but there was still a part of him that couldn't shake the feeling that something was very wrong. The fact that neither of them remembered Yuuma—or whatever she really was—was starting to make him uneasy.
"You guys are impossible," Issei muttered, shaking his head as he picked at his lunch. "I'm telling you, she was real. And I didn't imagine that kiss, either."
