The days following that first kiss were a whirlwind of emotions for both Sirius and Remus. There was a quiet joy that lingered between them, the kind that settled in their chests every time they exchanged a glance or shared a small touch. But there was also a certain tension—an unspoken worry about what would happen when their friends found out.
They hadn't told anyone yet. They were still navigating this new territory, trying to figure out what it meant for them. It was easier to keep it between the two of them for the time being, safer in some ways. But they both knew the time would come when they'd have to face the inevitable: telling the others.
It was a Saturday afternoon, the skies grey with the promise of rain, when the conversation finally came. The Marauders had gathered in their usual corner of the common room. James was chatting animatedly about something, Peter was half-listening, and Sirius and Remus were exchanging quiet, meaningful looks that didn't go unnoticed by their friends.
James paused mid-sentence, eyeing the pair of them with a raised brow. "You two've been acting funny lately," he said, his tone teasing but with an edge of curiosity. "What's going on?"
Sirius and Remus froze for a moment, caught off guard. Neither of them had expected James to pick up on it so quickly, but then again, it was James. He noticed everything.
"I—" Sirius began, but his voice faltered. Remus's hand brushed against his under the table, a silent comfort, and it steadied him enough to continue.
"It's... complicated," Remus said, his voice quieter than usual. He looked at Sirius, and for the briefest moment, he saw the same worry in his eyes. "But not in a bad way."
James's eyes narrowed, and he leaned forward, sensing that something more was at play. "Complicated, huh? You two are acting like someone's been hexed, not like you've just been 'complicated.' What's really going on?"
Peter, who had been staring at the two of them for a while, suddenly piped up, his voice a little higher than normal. "You're not... you're not mad at each other, are you?" he asked, glancing between them, clearly worried.
Sirius felt a flash of guilt, though he couldn't pinpoint why. He glanced at Remus, who gave him a small, reassuring smile before turning back to their friends.
"No," Remus said firmly, a gentle smile tugging at the corners of his mouth. "We're not mad at each other. We... we're together. We've been—" He paused, searching for the right words. "We've been together for a little while now."
James's mouth dropped open, his expression a mix of shock and disbelief. "Wait... what? You two? You and Sirius?" His voice was loud enough to draw the attention of a few nearby students, but James didn't seem to care.
Sirius's face flushed, but he managed to hold his ground, his eyes meeting James's with a mixture of apprehension and resolve. "Yeah, James. It's not a prank, if that's what you're thinking. We're... we're together," he repeated, his voice softer this time.
Peter blinked a few times, clearly trying to process the information. "But... how? When? Why didn't you—" He stopped himself, realizing he was rambling, and cleared his throat. "I mean, I didn't even know you two were... well, like that."
Remus smiled, his eyes softening as he glanced at Sirius. "It just... kind of happened. I know it's a lot to take in, but we didn't want to hide it from you. We just weren't sure how to... well, say it."
James was silent for a long moment, his eyes flicking back and forth between the two of them. It was hard to read his expression—there was surprise, sure, but also something else... something softer. He opened his mouth, and then closed it again, trying to gather his thoughts.
