The sun had barely started to peek over the horizon when Remus woke up with a groan. The soft sound of birds chirping outside the window and the faint glow of early morning light crept through the curtains, but he wasn't ready to face it just yet. His blanket was too warm, and his bed too comfortable.
He pulled the covers over his head and muttered to himself, "Not today."
But before he could drift back into the comforting embrace of sleep, the door to the dormitory burst open. A whirlwind of noise and energy filled the room as Sirius, Regulus, James, and Peter bounded in, their voices loud and cheerful.
"Wake up, Moony! It's your birthday!" James called, tugging the curtains aside with a grin. "Seventeen today! You're officially ancient!"
Remus rolled over, burying his face in the pillow. "Too early. I'm not ready for this," he mumbled.
Sirius, who had already started to unwrap a small box, ignored his protests. "Well, you don't have a choice, mate. We're here, and so is the party," he said, his voice teasing but warm. "Come on, get up. You're not allowed to sulk today."
Remus peered out from under the pillow with one eye, his messy hair sticking up in every direction. "A party? Really?"
"Of course!" Peter piped up, a grin plastered on his face. "We've got everything planned. It's going to be the best birthday ever!"
Remus sat up slowly, blinking at them through tired eyes. "What's the catch? This sounds suspiciously like one of your 'surprise' parties."
Regulus smirked. "What's wrong with a surprise party?"
"It's usually the surprise that ends up getting me in trouble," Remus muttered. "You remember the time I got stuck in a broom cupboard for an hour after a prank went wrong, don't you?"
"Oh, that was hilarious," Sirius said with a laugh, tossing the small box in Remus's direction. "But no, we've been careful this time. No broom cupboards, promise."
Remus caught the box and raised an eyebrow. "What is this?"
"Happy birthday!" James grinned. "Open it, already!"
Remus unwrapped the box carefully, his fingers brushing against the soft paper. Inside was a beautiful leather-bound book, the cover engraved with an intricate design. His fingers traced the etchings, and he smiled softly, knowing this had to be from Sirius—he'd always given the most thoughtful gifts.
"Thanks, guys," Remus said, his voice filled with sincerity. "This is... really special."
Sirius beamed at him. "Well, I figured you'd like it. You always have your nose in a book anyway. But know you can note down your thoughts. Regulus and I have our own. Ours are charmed so that they never run out of pages. We thought you would also like the same."
"Sirius gave me mine on my birthday when I was 5. I written in it everyday since," Regulus explained "Ever since, you guys got together he has been bugging me for ideas for gifts for you. When I suggested this."
Remus's gaze softened as he looked down at the book, running his thumb over the intricate design. The thought of Sirius asking Regulus for advice, of them planning this together, made his heart feel unexpectedly full.
"Thank you, really," Remus said, feeling a surge of warmth. "I can't believe you both went to so much trouble."
Sirius shrugged, trying to play it cool but clearly pleased. "Well, you're worth it, Moony. Besides, we're not done yet." He winked. "This is just part one of the day's festivities."
James chimed in, his grin widening. "And you can use that book to keep track of everything we've got planned! Just think, years from now, you'll look back and remember how we all almost got kicked out of the Three Broomsticks!"
