"If you smile when you are alone, then you really mean it."

XXXIII.

D A L I A

There was time in my life where I wasn't all smiles and giggles.

For some people it may be hard to believe, but it's true.

"You damn brat!", a slap echoes through the kitchen, "You ruined my life. Why can't you just die?".

I stood there with a blank face as I let my mother's words roll over me.

It was nothing new.

Actually it was quite the opposite, always the same.

My father left my mother right after my birth and she blamed me.

"Oh, Mommy is sorry Dalia, but why do you have to make Mommy so mad?".

"You're the reason your Dad left me! I wish you didn't exist!".

"I didn't mean that Dalia, you know that Mommy loves you, right?".

I took her words and slaps, every day.

Why? Because I loved her.

When she became sick, I was the one to stay by her side.

With her last breath she told me that I would never be happy.

And she was right, I wasn't happy now that she was gone.

Even when she made my life hell.

I wasn't a little girl anymore, but still she had the power over me.

I tried everything, but I just wasn't enough.

"I'm sorry but the customers have been complaining about you."

"Dalia, you never call back. I'm sorry but I have better things to do."

"Dalia, you'll never be happy...".

One day I am walking down an alley way when two guys approach me.

"Give us your money.", one says and I look at them tiredly.

I pull out my wallet and show it to them, "I don't have anything, sorry."

"Stop lying, bitch!", the other shouts, pulling out a knife.
