There's one lesson that no one ever learns in this world... It's that no one's safe. Whether you're alone, in a group, out in the world, or behind four sturdy walls, nothing ever lasts. No one's safe.
That was one lesson Vi had been taught many times recently. It's been four months since the fall, and the teenager has seen more loss in those four months than she had in her whole 16 years of living. Despite seeing history repeat itself, she never learned. She was too young, too optimistic, trying to see the good in everyone while she tried to keep her sister, Powder, alive.
They had walked for what felt like days, the sun burning into their backs as dehydration began setting in. Covered in dirt and dried blood, Vi led Powder along a narrow road, a road that didn't seem to end. They hadn't seen a single living soul since setting out on their journey, and with no food and water, they were losing hope, even if Vi tried her best to hide it. As they continued dragging their feet along the hot concrete of the road, Vi heard Powder's stomach rumble as the 13 year old clutched her stomach, trying to hide her desperation as she followed her pink haired sibling, praying for a miracle. Vi began to feel guilt well up inside of her, there was nothing she could do to comfort her sister anymore, and they were both just as hungry as the other. Their bones began to feel heavy as time passed, still no signs of life or shelter.
If she weren't so tired, Vi might even be impressed at how little infected they had seen. But perhaps that was due to the fact they were travelling in silence, no words to share with one another as they silently feared what was going to happen if they continued this way.
Just as she was about to give up hope, barely within her sight, Vi could see a structure, and immediately turned to her sister, smiling.
"Pow, look! A building! We're saved"
She pointed out joyfully, inciting hope within Powder as they both looked at the building in the distance, it wasn't too far, but they could see that there was nothing in their way, the road was clear of infected and there were no humans in sight. Seeing this, they both put everything they had into sprinting up the road. If there was food, they weren't waiting to get to it, even if it killed them. This could be their saving grace. As they neared the building, there was still nothing in sight, this was it.In mere minutes, they were standing outside of the building, it was definitely abandoned that was for sure, but just to be safe, Vi reached down and pulled out a blade that she kept concealed in her boot, it was the only weapon they had. Powder stood behind her, relying on her sister for safety as they slowly approached the front door of the building, unsure of what they might find inside. the pink haired teen grabbed the door with a firm grip, keeping her knife ready as she pushed the door open slowly, before deciding it was safe and entering the room, Powder tailing her closely as she moved. The place was empty, apart from some half packed boxes sitting on a table at the side of the room, toppled over cans sprawled out across the surface of the table as though someone had been scared away from looting. The place was covered in a thick layer of dust, even the floor was coated as though the place hadn't been touched in some time. That was until Vi realised something, boot marks on the floor within the dust, recent ones.
Her eyes widened as the pieces were put together in her head, but it was too late. Three men emerged from hiding, aiming weapons at the two kids, yelling at them to put their hands up as Vi cursed herself for being so stupid. Powder flew into a panic, throwing her hands in the air as she was ordered to and trying to hold back her tears as she took quick erratic breaths, scared. Although she was the one who made the mistake of bringing them in here, Vi kept her composure as she raised her hands slowly, before loosening her grip on her blade and letting it fall to the floor beneath her feet. The three men emerged from their cover and surrounded the girls, one of them approaching and kicking the blade away from Vi before backing up a few steps
"What are you doing here!"
One of them demanded in a harsh tone.
"We were just passing through... We were looking for food. And can you calm down, you've already beat us"
Vi answered as she shook her hands slightly, reminding the men of the position they were in. The girls were outmatched and they knew it.
"Where are you from?"
The man questioned further, but with a calmer tone this time, even if he was stern.
"Our camp was attacked a few days ago... We've been walking ever since"
