A/N: The design of Vi's gloves were heavily inspired by the knuckle duster upgrades you can get in the Mad Max video game. I wanted to keep her signature fighting style while trying to keep it realistic. Thanks for coming to my ted talk :)
After scrambling around her trailer, Vi had finally found her trusty, yet dangerous, gauntlet-like gloves. They were typical leather gloves, but she had Powder add a little bit of customisation to them a few months prior. The gloves had been customised with bits of metal along the knuckles, turning the gloves into knuckle dusters, essentially. The back of the glove was completely reinforced with metal that followed the bone structure of an actual hand, before being linked with a metal bar with a serrated edge along the line of the knuckle, inside of the glove was padded out to provide Vi with some comfort while she used them. Although she could just use a knife, Vi quickly learned that in knife fights she had a habit of dropping her blade and opted to use her knuckles to bash in the face of her opponent. Although the gloves were pretty heavy thanks to the modifications, they still worked like a treat, and were strapped on using a leather buckle that allowed Vi to fasten them to her wrist, no one was taking these off of her in a fight.
With five minutes to spare, Vi scrambled out of her trailer and began jogging over to where the runners assigned to today's expedition were beginning to gather for a debrief, only to be stopped in her tracks by Vander, who stepped into her road with a concerned look on his face.
"Vi? How did the meeting go? Where are you going in such a hurry? Is everything okay?"
He blurted out back to back questions, obviously alarmed by Vi's eagerness to get to where she was going.
"It went fine, I'll tell you the details when I'm back, see you soon Vander"
Vi dismissed, stepping to the side of Vander and jogging past him, waving as she moved. After looking at her direction, Vander saw the runners ahead of her and didn't take very long to put two and two together.
"Wait.. You're a runner now?!"
He called out in disbelief, immediately unhappy and worried about the arrangement, how could he keep her safe now? Vi simply looked back at him with a smile before turning her focus back on her goal, not being late. Finally, she was able to do something she was well-suited for."You're late..."
A stern, unimpressed voice emitted from the tent that Vi had just entered, causing her to look right at the source. A strong looking man stood in front of a small group of 4 people, all ready to go as they carried half-empty backpacks and their weapons close to them. There was a serious atmosphere in the air and while everyone looked experienced and ready for action, vi stood there with nothing but her clothes and her gloves.
"I had two minutes to spare"
She joked, immediately kicking herself for her cheeky remark as she tried to break the tension.
"You're not funny.. Can someone get her some gear please"
Immediately, a woman left the small huddle of runners and retreated from the tent, rushing to get Vi what she needed to survive outside the walls.
"You missed the debrief.. But it wouldn't have made sense to you anyway, with this being your first time so I'll give you the full rundown on how we work"
The man's serious demeanour dropped in an instant, and his new tone was relaxed as he walked over to a table, beckoning Vi to join him with a wave of his hand. Which she did without any regrettable comments. The man pointed at the map laid out on the table, there were lots of markings on it, a lot of places crossed off while others were labelled and circled, with routes marked along the map, none of which made sense to Vi yet.
"This is us.. as you probably figured out"
He explained, pointing at the settlement's logo that had been drawn on the map. This whole settlement had been built around an old apartment complex, using the open grass at the back of the building as a type of FOB.
"These crosses here are places that are looted. And these skulls are areas lost to the infection, no matter how desperate we get, we'll never set foot in these, you wouldn't last five minutes before getting torn apart by the infected"
Vi nodded, taking everything she was being told.
"This here is where we're going.. Our expeditions can take days, even weeks if we run into problems. But the main thing is that we never rush our missions. We take as long as we need to and make sure we get it done right"
The man explained, straightening his posture and looking at Vi.
"The dashed lines on the map are the general route we plan to take. I know it's far, but it has to be done. Every building within 6 hours from here has already been looted in the past, so there's no such thing as an overnight trip anymore. If anything happens, you do not act on your own unless told otherwise, you'll hear either me or my second in command give you the order when you're free to act as you see fit, and that order will only be given in emergencies that absolutely require it"
"So you're running your own little militia?"
"Not quite, we don't act strict because we want order, we do it for safety, a few weeks ago we lost four runners in a matter of minutes all because one boy couldn't keep his composure and ran off, leaving our rear open to attack during a struggle against the infected. We don't want to lose any more friends"
"So how does this go, are there ranks, you the sergeant?"
"No, I am simply the leader of this group, titles are unimportant, but everyone brings something to the table"
