After the incident that killed his brother and friends, Kade suffers from PTSD. He has recurring nightmares of his brother and also has a physical reminder in the form of a scar on his left leg after a piece of debris scraped it while he was climbing up onto the overpass during the storm.
Still traumatized by their deaths and his experiment failing, he left his past in Oklahoma and rarely calls or goes home to visit. Now, five years later, Kade lives in New York City and works as a meteorological operations officer at NOAA.
Javi, who now works with Storm Par, pays him a visit. The two catch up over lunch. Storm Par is a private company that scans tornados in 3D and Javi needs his expertise to locate tornados. He invites him to join his team to test a new tornado scanning system in Oklahoma. Reluctant about the offer, Kade declines and return to work.
The next day, after waking up from another nightmare, Kade checks his phone and sees news of a town recently destroyed by a tornado. He's also gotten a voicemail from Javi, who convinces him to reconsider. Kade finally accepts the invitation, giving him a week of his time.
