Briarlight was the eldest of Moxxie and Silverstream's kits, born in the same litter as Thornclaw and Dovewing. As a young apprentice, he was bold and adventurous, like his littermates. He also had a healthy curiosity about Jayfeather's skills as a medicine cat. Near the end of his apprenticeship a storm hit the woods, sending a huge, loose-rooted beech tree crashing down into the hollow. Bumblestripe heard the tree start to fall and Sandstar ordered an evacuation of the entire camp. The blind elder Longtail was killed because she returned to her den to retrieve Mousefur's fresh-kill. Briarpaw chased after her, trying to fetch her back, but was also caught by the brushing branches.
He survived, but his spine was broken, leaving his hindlegs numb and paralyzed. At first Briarpaw believed his future to be utterly bleak and pointless, and he even refused to eat, unwilling to take prey that could feed the cats who hunted and patrolled for the Clan. It took stern words from Jayfeather to remind him that a Clan cares for all its cats, including kits and elders who are unable to hunt for themselves. If Briarpaw gave up on life, he would be betraying the warrior code itself.
So Briarpaw started to work hard within the confines of his injury, strengthening his front legs until he could drag himself around the camp and doing breathing exercises to keep his chest strong and clear. Briarpaw helped Jayfeather by sorting and storing herbs, he kept kits entertained, he soothed the elders when they were troubled by bad dreams. And when his littermates received their warrior names, Briarlight was given one too, a reflection of his fierce-burning spirit, in recognition of the unimaginably difficult and unique apprenticeship that he had served.
