Maria gripped Shadow's hand as they raced through the halls of the Ark. "Hurry Shadow!" she called to him over her shoulder. They were running from something the professor had called the "Guardian Units of Nations." They had stormed the ARK to destroy all evidence of Project Shadow and all who knew of it.
Suddenly, Maria turned a corner, and they were in a room with two escape pods. "Get inside Shadow quickly; we don't have much time," she whispered as she pushed him inside. "Maria, what are you doing?" he asked as she closed the door and went to the controls.
"Relax Shadow, I'm right behind you, but since you are their main target it's best if you go first." She pressed some buttons preparing it to send him to Earth. Maria turned excitedly to Shadow, "Oh Shadow! Soon we'll be on Earth together! I can't wait to join you!"
Suddenly soldiers burst into the room. "Maria!," Shadow cried banging on the door. The soldier pointed his gun at her. "Step away from the controls or we will shoot," he commanded.
Maria, however, did not let go of the controls. She grasped the lever preparing to send him down. "I'm gonna give you till the count of three. One, two-" She pulled the lever. Gunshots. "MARIA!" Shadow cried as the pod fell from the ship.
Shadow woke up in a pool of sweat, tears streaming down his muzzle. He groaned as he buried his face in his hands. He couldn't remember the last time he had slept well, much less a good dream.
These dreams of Maria had always haunted him. Some are happier than others, but the one he had the most was of the day he lost her. The day he lost everything.
He forced himself out of bed, brushed his teeth, fixed his quills, and slipped on his gloves and shoes. He filled a cup with coffee beans and ate them with a spoon. Suddenly, he heard a small "ding" come from his phone. He lifted it to see Rouge was calling. He answered it, lifting the phone to his ear while he continued eating his coffee beans.
"Hey hun, how are you?"
"Could be better but fine, you?"
"I'm doing alright myself. I wanted to call to let you know the gang is having another meeting at Tails' lab today. Be there by 9:00."
Ugh of course. Another stupid meeting he had to attend. Rouge and the others had agreed to meet once a week to discuss any threats or strategies, though most of the time he felt they were used as an excuse for a hangout. He usually was conveniently busy on those days.
He finished his breakfast and headed over to the lab. He knocked on the door where Tails greeted him. "Shadow, glad you could make it! Come on in," he said stepping aside so he could enter.
Inside he saw Knuckles, Amy, Rouge, Sonic, and Silver. They waved him over and he joined the group in the living space.
Sonic sped over to meet him. "Hey Shads! How have you been," he smiled, wrapping his arm around his shoulders. Shadow shoved him off growling slightly under his breath. "I was fine until I had to put up with you." Sonic chuckled, "Aww your welcome!" Shadow growled and began to tense up, preparing to fight.
Amy raced in between the two. "Boys! Stop! This is exactly why we are having this meeting." The two looked towards her. "What do you mean?" Sonic asked. Amy looked shocked as if she had just realized what she'd said. Rouge groaned facepalming. "Sorry," Amy said her ears drooping slightly.
Shadow was furious. So this is why they had brought him here? For some stupid lecture? He turned to leave, but Amy grabbed his wrist. "Shadow, please! Just hear what we have to say," she pleaded. He hesitated but ultimately returned to the living space.
"Alright, now that everyone's settled down just please hear us out you two," Silver said. Tails sighed, "Look, you two have been fighting so much it's gotten to the point that the whole team is being put at stake. You two fighting constantly and getting hurt just isn't something we can have anymore." Everyone nodded in agreement.
"It's not my fault!" Sonic cried. He sounded almost offended. "All I've ever tried to do is be his friend!" Tails raised a brow, "Sonic I think we all know you provoke him constantly. Your purposeful teasing just to irritate him needs to stop or at the very least become less of a common occurrence." Sonic crossed his arms and turned away.
"As for you Shadow," Rouge stood up. "You need to stop always resorting to violence the second he gets on your nerves. You can think he's a pain all you want but you had better stop all of this unnecessary fighting." Shadow growled, "I knew coming to this meeting was a mistake! All you're doing is lecturing me and telling me what to do, and I won't sit here and take it." "Shadow that is not what we are doing and you know it! You two just need to stop being so childish and be friends."
Sonic and Shadow looked at each other. With a sigh, Sonic reached out his hand. "No more fighting? Give each other a second chance?" he said with a smile. Shadow hesitated, he didn't want to give this stupid hedgehog another chance, but with everyone eagerly waiting he took his hand and shook it."Fine."
