Once again Shadow awoke in a pool of sweat. He felt as if it had almost become a normal part of his routine at this point. He looked at himself in the mirror.

Maria would be so disappointed if she could see him now. He wasn't the same hedgehog she had loved. He had almost destroyed the planet she loved for goodness sake! He felt as if he were nothing but a burden to those he cared for.

He looked back up into the mirror and noticed he was crying. Stop it, he thought, you have a GUN mission today. There's no time for weakness.

He turned on the faucet and proceeded to wash his face. The water was cool and it felt nice. He brushed his quills and put on his clothes before sending Rouge a message that he was on his way.

Sonic's POV:

"I'm going out for a run!" he called to Tails from over his shoulder. Tails waved him goodbye and off he went.

The last few days had been good. No Eggman, no drama, and what's even better is that he and Shadow seemed to be on good terms finally.

Shadow was a complicated subject for Sonic. He wasn't sure how to feel about him. He truly did admire him. He enjoyed the time they spent together, yet some days he could hardly stand him.

He was also so hard to talk to. No matter what Sonic tried, he seemed to hate him even though he had really only been trying to be friends.

He tried to shake away the thoughts. He'd been thinking of Shadow a lot since the meeting and it was all just so confusing. He'd come out to run so he could relax without thinking.

He ran all over Green Hill, waving to everyone he knew as he passed them. He really had a great life. He loved his friends and would do anything for them.

Sonic's communicator suddenly began to rang. He clicked a button and answered it.

"Hey Sonic, it's Amy."

"Hey, Ames! What's up?"

Amy had been Sonic's friend for years. He originally hadn't liked her. She was too clingy and always was trying to be his girlfriend. Sonic usually ran away from her back then, but now she appeared to have gotten over it and the two were as close as ever.

"I was wondering what I should bring for snacks for our meeting next week. I seriously can't come up with anything for the whole group to enjoy!"

Sonic chuckled, "Uh oh, this sounds like an emergency! I'll be there soon!"

Time Skip to the next day~~~~

Shadow's POV:

Shadow parked his bike at his house. He had just returned home from his mission. It hadn't been a difficult mission, in fact, it was hardly a challenge for him.

He opened the door and stepped inside. His home felt cold and empty. It was quiet and dark, just him and his thoughts.

He sat down on the couch and watched the news. Sonic saves a cat from a tree, some kid did something for a charity, blah blah blah.

Shadow turned off the news. He was beginning to get a headache and went to the kitchen to pop a couple of Tylenol.

He was exhausted and fell asleep on the couch after a while, his brain still buzzing with thoughts of Maria and what could have been.
