After entering in his guest room, Jungkook finally allowed himself to exhale, his mind replaying every second of his tense encounter in Jinhee’s office. The mission weighed heavily on him, and he could feel the stakes settling into his bones. Every move he made from here on out would have to be careful, deliberate. One slip, and the empire he sought to dismantle could close in on him with deadly precision, shattering everything he’d worked so hard for.
He sank into the plush bed, feeling its soft give beneath him, but his mind refused to rest. Plans unfolded in his head, each one layered and complex, calculating all the next steps and backup options. He had the information he needed, but leaving the apartment was impossible for now. Drawing suspicion would only end in disaster. He’d have to wait, bide his time, and find a way to pass the data to Yoongi and Jhope when the moment was right.
Suddenly, a soft knock echoed through the room, startling him out of his thoughts. Heart pounding, he quickly tucked the USB drive and his phone under the pillow, then lay back, feigning drowsiness as he sat up slightly and rubbed his eyes.
The door creaked open, casting a sliver of warm light across the dimly lit room. Taehyung stepped inside, his face softened by the shadows and the faint glow from the hallway. There was an unexpected gentleness to his expression, a rare moment of vulnerability that made Jungkook’s pulse quicken. Taehyung was dangerous in more ways than one.
“Are you awake?” Taehyung’s voice was low, as if hesitant to disturb the quiet stillness of the room.
Jungkook blinked, keeping his expression soft, disoriented, as if he’d just been stirred from sleep. “Taehyung?” he mumbled, his voice heavy with feigned grogginess.
Taehyung took a few steps closer, stopping at the foot of the bed. His gaze swept over Jungkook, a strange mixture of concern and something unreadable lingering in his eyes. “I wanted to check on you before heading to bed. You looked… a bit unsteady earlier,” he murmured, his voice carrying a quiet intensity that sent a shiver down Jungkook’s spine.
Jungkook’s heart thudded harder, but he kept his expression calm, even allowing a small, grateful smile to cross his lips. “Thank you… I just felt a little off earlier. I’m fine now,” he reassured, his tone soft and sincere, masking the thrum of adrenaline coursing through him.
Taehyung nodded slowly, though his eyes lingered on Jungkook’s face, as if trying to peel back the layers to see something deeper beneath the surface. For a moment, Jungkook felt as though Taehyung could see right through his calm facade, that the careful mask he wore might slip. But then Taehyung’s gaze softened, a flicker of warmth breaking through the usual guarded look in his eyes, and he seemed to accept Jungkook’s answer.
“You should get some rest,” Taehyung said finally, his voice a touch softer than before. “I’ll have someone bring you breakfast in the morning. And if you need anything…” He hesitated, his gaze drifting away for a moment, his jaw tightening. “Well, I’m right down the hall.”
There was something unspoken hanging in the air, a tension neither of them acknowledged aloud. Jungkook felt the weight of Taehyung’s words, the subtle implications hidden beneath them, as though Taehyung was offering more than just his presence down the hall. He had to remind himself to stay focused, to keep his mission in mind and not let his guard down, not even for a second.
