Today was one of those days where the morning started like any other, but then, bam—something big happens. By "big," I mean the announcement that had the entire school buzzing for the rest of the day.
It started in homeroom. Mr. Dreadmore was droning on about some school policy nobody cares about when the PA system crackled to life. Everyone perked up immediately because it usually means something interesting, or at least a break from Dreadmore's rambling.
"Good morning, students! This is Principal Monroe with a very special announcement. I'm thrilled to remind everyone that our annual Homecoming Dance is just around the corner! Mark your calendars for Friday, October 13th, and get ready for a night to remember!"
As soon as the announcement ended, the room erupted. Whispers, giggles, and excited chatter spread faster than a rumor. Even Mr. Dreadmore, who hates any disruption to his "teaching time," couldn't rein it in. He just rolled his eyes and muttered something about "pointless gatherings."
Leo, who was sitting a row behind me, leaned forward and whispered, "So, who are you taking, man?"
I shrugged. Homecoming wasn't exactly at the top of my to-do list, but it was all anyone could talk about by lunch. Ben and Lo were already plotting a grand entrance (they're aiming for something that's either going to be legendary or land them in detention), while Leo was trying to decide between two girls who'd been dropping hints for weeks.
As for me? I hadn't even thought about asking anyone yet. The idea of it made my palms sweaty, and I could feel my face getting warm just imagining it. But if everyone was going, did that mean I had to? Would skipping make me look like a total loser?
The dance isn't for another couple of weeks, so I guess I have time to decide. But judging by how the guys were talking about it, Homecoming is going to be a big deal—whether I like it or not.
