Part 23

Emily's pov

Scarlett phones me every couple of days when we both feel like we need to talk but it's not all the time. It's been a couple of days since she last phoned and her next should be in a day or so. Lizzie wanted me to give Scarlett another go and i was on the edge of both so she made the final call. The argument we had seemed to get light and disappeard up into the air. Its not on my mind all the time anymore but it does come back every so often. 

The doorbell rings followed by knock, shard and sudden. I turn the tv off and get up from the sofa, im not expecting a visitor. I walk over and open it, Scarlett standing in front of me in a hoodie and with a small warm smile. "hey" she says, her voice quiet and warm "hi" i reply and look down seeing Rose by her side. I smile at her softly and then look back and Scarlett "i didn't know you were coming" "no, we weren't going to. I was going to phone you but Rose wanted to see you instead and i was going to phone you and ask if it was okay but my phone died" she explains quite quickly. I smile and open the door wide "well come in. I can't let you drive all this way and tell you to go" I tease looking at Rose. They come in and I close the door behind them, Rose hugs my waist taking me back a bit but I hug her back. "I missed you" she mumbles making me smile softly "I missed you too. Should we take your shoes off?" I sit her on the stairs and untie her trainers "have you been doing lots of colouring?" I ask referring to the books I gave her "finished!' I raise my eyebrows "really?! All of them?" She nods happily and stands up after I put her shoes on the floor. "mommy show Emily!" Rose tells her mom eagerly "why dont you show her, you drew them" Scarlett smiles and strokes Roses chin. Rose looks in the bag and then pulls out the colouring books "look!" she opens the first page of the book and holds it up to me.I take it from her and smile flicking through the pages "woah! are you sure you drew this?" she nods "your such as artist" i smile handing the papers back "like mommy! shes good at colouring too". scarletts hands appear in Roses hair and i loo up at her, her soft smile and pink plump lips "could i get you some drinks? theres wine, lemonade, orange juice, apple juice, mojitos.." i list "Orange please!" Rose shouts and i nod "of course. With ice?" she frowns and shakes her head "got it" i look at Scarlett "umm could i have a small glass of red?" "of course". 

Scarlett came with me to the kitchen whilst Rose went into the lounge. "so what have you been doing?" i ask getting three glasses down from the cupboard "nothing really, just work and looking after Rose-we went to the beach other day actually. What about you?" i shrug and take a bottle of red from the rack "just work" she smiles and leans against the counter. I pour the wine into two glasses and hand hers to her "your house is so nice, its so bright" i take the orange out the fridge "thank you" "no problem". I pour Roses orange juice into a glass and pickup my wine "are you trusting a four year old not to break that?" Scarlett asks with a sneaky smile "uhh yeah? I don't have any others, i don't really have any kids over unless its Marks nieces but their old now" i share. "Emily look!" Rose's voice calls through the house, full of excitement. Scarlett smiles and follows me into the lounge, a big pile of cushions and blankets make a sandcastle infront of us with Rose sitting inside. I chuckle and Scarlett shakes her head "look at all this mess" she smiles sitting on the couch with her glass "sorry mommy, sorry Emily" Rose apologises getting sad "uh no, don't be sorry. I love your castle, is it princess's only?" i tease putting two glasses on the table. "Emily will you play with me? i need your help to make it really big" Rose exclaims. I look over at Scarlett who's smiling at her daughter. She looks at me still with the same expression "go ahead but only if you want to" i nod and slide down onto the carpet "alright cutie, show me this castle" she grabs my hand squeezing it tightly and pulls me towards her castle. She takes me inside and gives me tour even though its not even big enough for the both of us "this is the sleeping area and this is were we eat" i feel Scarlett's eyes on us and a part of me wants her to join.

After play, Rose falls asleep on the couch like completely past out. "shes so cute" i say with a smile watching her "she's absolutely nackered" Scarlett returns running her hands through the four year olds hair. I pick up my glass of wine and hold it between my hands "are you free this weekend?" Scarlett whispers "uh yeah. I'm going back to work in the middle east next week but i can do the weekend" "oh..ok. Bring your sleepwear?" i nod "okay, if you want me to" Scalrett smiles softly and puts her hand on my arm. i dont move it, instead it calms me "are you excited to go back to the middle east?" i nod "yeah! We're setting up a camp for children who need medical attention so i'm looking forward to that...i dont think my family want me to go but" i shrug "its my job, they dont exactly agree with the career choice" Scarlett laughs careful not to wake Rose "well their really proud, i sure am" i smile widely and hold her hand "and I know you don't agree with it either" Scarlett raises her eyebrows "..well it's not that I don't agree with it, I love that you help people I just think it's dangerous because I don't want to loose you" "your an avenger, what's the difference?' we both laugh. I bite my bottom lip and look down at our hands "I'm sorry for not telling you about my son..it's just a very hard topic to talk about" I explain looking into her eyes "no don't be sorry, I should have guessed. I'm sorry" I smile softly "it just..feels like there's always a hole in me, like something's always missing. With Luca passing away and then Mark, it felt like everyone I love was going to be taken away" "that's not going to happen, I promise" I lean in to hug her and she hugs me back. "I love you" I whisper resting my head on her shoulder "I love you too"
