Running full speed through the streets of the Outer Banks from the cut to figure eight was not on Camilla's summer bingo card. There was a ringing sound in her ears as she sprinted as fast as she could, brown hair getting knotted from the wind flowing through it.

It didn't make sense, none of it did.

There was no way that Laurel Chen, one of the most wealthy, popular, lady's on the island, was a killer. Though there was little proof, the only being the gun, it was still entirely possible.

Cami was gasping for air by the time she reached her gated neighbourhood. The large sky blue house stood out from the others on the street- that was why Laurel convinced Mark, Camilla's father, to purchase it. She wanted to stand out from the others.

A long jetty ran from the backyard into the deep water of the marsh. The beach wasn't far way from their front yard, meaning Camilla could go surfing whenever she felt like. When she didn't feel like getting sand all over her, she just hopped into the large rectangular pool, that was nearly the length of the house, out the back.

But something that wasn't usually near, or at her house, was the police SUV parked in the long driveway.

The familiar feeling of anxiety began brewing in her chest, bubbling as if it were about to explode any second. She had to compose herself, remember the promise she made with the group of teenagers she had just been with.

So, Camilla quickly combed her fingers through her wavy chocolate brown hair, getting rid of the tangles, taking a final deep breath before walking into her house.

"Mom, i'm home!" She played dumb, figuring that would probably work out the best.

act like you don't know anything

There was a noise of shuffling feet from the downstairs living area, before she was met with a few familiar faces.

"Camilla," Shoupe smiled widely, placing his hands on his hips, he nodded his head once as a signal of greeting. Plumb was also there, standing next to Laurel with a stern expression on her face, making Cami feel uneasy.

But, she pushed that feeling aside, more worried about what she had just seen at the chateau.

The gun that killed her father

That award winning smile was plastered on her face again, "Officers, nice to see you on a great day like today!" She exclaimed a bit too enthusiastically, causing her to mentally facepalm herself.

Plumb gave here a quick up and down, "You look awfully tired, where have you been?" Her hand rested on her gun as she spoke. The action may have been out of muscle memory, but in Cami's mind, she could have definitely been doing it to threaten her.
