The engagement hall was alive, buzzing with laughter and chatter. Everything glimmered—golden fairy lights dangling from the high ceilings, tables covered in elegant linen, and roses arranged so perfectly they looked fake. A live band played softly in the background, adding an air of sophistication to the chaos.
Standing at the entrance, I took a deep breath and glanced down at Y/n. She looked ethereal, her dress shimmering under the lights, her lips tugging up into a shy smile as she took in the grandeur.
“Ready to do this, Kookoo?” she teased, nudging me slightly.
I smirked. “I was ready years ago when you first shared a chocolate bar with me. This is just a formality.”
Her cheeks turned pink, but before she could fire back, her mom—Haneul—rushed up, clutching a clipboard and looking like she was on the verge of a nervous breakdown.
“Jeon Jungkook! Kim Y/n!” she shrieked, her voice cutting through the background noise like a knife. “Why are you both standing there like mannequins? People are waiting for you! The photographer! The caterer! The—”
“Mom, breathe,” Y/n interjected, holding her hands up. “We’re literally on time.”
“On time isn’t good enough!” Haneul exclaimed, clutching her chest dramatically. “You need to be early! Look at your father—he’s already overseeing the dessert station. And you two just stand here, as if today isn’t the most important day of your lives!”
Y/n groaned. “Dad is eating at the dessert station, not overseeing it.”
I couldn’t help but chuckle. “Mrs. Kim, everything looks amazing. Don’t stress—”
“Don’t stress?” She rounded on me so fast I took a step back. “Don’t stress? Jungkook, this isn’t a gaming tournament! This is an engagement! There are guests to entertain, speeches to make, a timeline to follow!”
Y/n shot me a look that screamed help me, but I was having too much fun watching her mom spiral into chaos.
“Y/n, why are you just standing there? Off you two to the stage ! And for heaven’s sake, both of you, smile! This is supposed to be a happy day!”
“Mom, we are smiling,” Y/n deadpanned, though her lips twitched in amusement.
Haneul let out a frustrated groan, muttering something about “youth these days” before bustling off to terrorize another vendor.
Y/n let out a sigh of relief, leaning into me. “Do you see what I deal with?”
I grinned. “Your mom’s a legend. I don’t know whether to be scared or impressed.”
“She’s both,” Y/n muttered before straightening up. “Okay, we should probably go—”
I grabbed her wrist, gently tugging her toward a quieter hallway. “Not yet. Come with me.”
