Kirk had been acting strangely lately, but I didn't have the bandwidth to care. Our interactions had dwindled to mere pleasantries.

As I pored over crucial documents for upcoming business meetings, someone entered my office without knocking – again.

"What is it, Kirk?" I asked brusquely.

He hesitated, prompting me to raise an eyebrow.

"We have a business proposal and meeting next week in London," he began.

I nodded, well aware of the project's importance.

"You need to visit London next week to meet the clients," I stated.

Kirk's voice trembled. "I won't be able to go, Freen."

I slammed my pen down. "What? You know how crucial this is!"

"Please hear me out," Kirk's frustration grew. "My mom is ill; I need to care for her."

His emotional plea fell flat. I eyed him impassively, recalling how his family had pushed him into an unwanted marriage without regard for his feelings.

"I'll handle it," I said curtly, suspending Kirk.

Now, I had to prepare and pack for London.

Thoughts swirled as I lay on my sofa:

"Why do I have to meet their lawyer instead of the clients directly?
What's the point of hiring a middleman?
Is this a power play or just unnecessary bureaucracy?"

I sighed, frustration simmering.

"Their excuse – the lawyer is a family friend – seems dubious.
Are they hiding something or just overly cautious?"

My inner monologue continued:

"And now I have to prepare for this meeting alone.
Kirk's out, and I'm left to deal with the fallout."

I rubbed my temples, warding off the growing headache.

"Why can't anything be straightforward for once?"

The silence in my office seemed oppressive, a reminder of the weighty responsibilities ahead.

"I'll need to review the documents again, anticipate every possible question...
And hope their lawyer doesn't throw any curveballs."

With a deep breath, I stood up, ready to tackle the challenge.

"Time to put on my game face."
