Part 1: What am I to do with you?

The sun shone down on the stone beneath our feet. A gentle sea breeze blew through, lifting the edges of my blue and white blouse. The bustling plaza was filled with noise of sales being made and dogs barking, sea birds wailing their incessant cries, and the clopping of boots against the stone.

Faded purples, greys, and reds decorated the storefronts selling various goods, fruits, vegetables, herbs, and jewelry, even freshly baked bread. Amidst all the chaos, a white piece of paper with an ink sketch stood out on the grey cobbled wall. I stared at it for a moment, even tilted my head to the side, but there was no mistaking that face. I'd heard rumors of this man, but I'd never seen him. Looking at it now, though, I knew the Jack Sparrow everyone spoke of was the same man I knew long ago.

"What did you do to get yourself into trouble this time?" I asked as I stared at the poster up close. "And for such a hefty bounty too... what in the world have you been up to?"

Of course, I didn't expect a response from a poster.

"You seem to have all but forgotten what your life was before you were a pirate," I went on. "And that your promise was first to me, and not the sea."

I clutched the locket that was around my neck, and fumbled for the latch to open it. Inside was a picture of me, and a young Jack, so barely recognizable. Yes, he had the same long hair, but this was well before he had been able to grow any facial hair, or donned the robes of a pirate. He wore the same outfits as everyone else in our village, the white shirt and brown pants...

Something changed in him when he got a taste of piracy for the first time. He was going to leave without even saying goodbye that day, had I not caught him in the act.

...

I had been out in the plaza that evening, helping my parents close up shop. We lived in a bit of a less fortunate neighborhood, so I had to start working for them at a young age. A figure enveloped in the shadows was headed towards the dock. We were no strangers to thievery, so I followed the man in hopes of stopping him. I didn't shout or holler. I didn't want the man to know I'd spotted him yet. I chased after him but kept my distance. Finally, he stepped out of the shadows, and towards a pirate ship anchored in the docks. It was then that I was able to clearly see his features in the moonlight.

"Jack?" I gasped.

"Do you know this young lady?" A burly pirate asked him.

"She followed me here," He answered. "Though she might have thought I was a thief. We're prone to robberies around here."

"Jack, what are you doing?" I asked him.

"You need to get out of here," He insisted.

"And leave you at the mercy of these pirates?" I gasped. "Jack, come on, we have to go back to the village. It isn't safe here."

"You're right," He nodded. "It's not safe. For you."

"What are you going on about?" I asked him.

"Did he not tell you?" One of the taller pirates sneered. "Why else do you think he would sneak out here in the middle of the night, when no one else was watching?"

"What... what do you mean?" I gasped.

"Boy, she's a dull one," Another pirate spoke up. "He was lookin' to join us, lass."

"Wh-what?" I pressed. "Jack, why--?"

"We've had enough of your questions, lass," The pirates insisted. "Leave while we're still giving you a chance."

"Jack--" I tried again.

"You should listen to them," He insisted.

"And leave you--?" I started to ask.

"I'd rather not see you get hurt," Jack told me.

"Oh, so you care enough to not want to see me get hurt..." I muttered. "But not enough to tell me you were going to go off galavanting with some pirates?!"

"I knew you wouldn't understand--" Jack started to say.

"You're right, I don't," I insisted. "What's wrong with your life here? I thought you were happy. I thought we were friends. And I thought you had a job with the British fleet?"

Jack's expression faltered.

"Things got complicated," He shrugged nonchelauntly

"What did you do?!" I demanded to know.

"Oi, lady, back off," The pirates warned.

"Clearly you need a bit more of a stern warning," One of them concluded.

"AAIIIEEE!" I screamed as he slashed my shoulder with his cutlass, creating a big gash, a scar which I still bore today, and was told by all my friends I was lucky to survive.

"I'm sorry," Jack apologized as he boarded the ship with the pirates, and they left the dock before the people came running from the village to see what was the matter.

I never saw Jack again after that.

...

I knew he had his bounties, I'd seen them all around the plaza when I'd come to do my weekly shopping. But I'd never been able to spot him. That was, until today.

I heard quite a commotion in the center of the plaza, and rushed over to see what was the matter. Guards were dragging Jack Sparrow through the area, presumably to one of the prison cells in the tower. I contemplated for a moment as to weather or not I should make a move to help him, considering the way he left me. I was still confused and hurt and bitter with the way it all happened, but... was that really enough to just stand by and watch as he was dragged off to prison and sentenced to death?

I sighed and set my basket of goods down, hidden in some nearby plants.

"I can't believe I'm actually considering doing this..." I muttered as I watched, waiting for a moment of opportunity to pull him away safely. "You dirty little betrayer..."

The crowd was too thick. I'd have to wait for them to take him to the prison, then bust him out. I snuck carefully behind them, hiding or pretending to be a part of the crowd whenever they looked back. As they got farther away from the crowd, I knew I couldn't continue to trail right behind them for risk of being seen. I walked over to the stone wall and used my sword as a means to scale it. I climbed all the way over to the window of Jack's cell. I laid low and waited for the guards to leave before whispering--

"Psst! Sparrow!"

"Huh?" He wondered, looking down from the window to see me. "Oh. You're not a member of my crew."

"No, I'm not," I responded cooly. "Were you expecting them?"

"Maybe," Jack shrugged.

"Do they even know where you are?" I asked him.

"You've got a good point there," He responded without really answering the question. "Probably not. We were just making a supply run in the port when--"

"You were spotted and arrested due to the numerous bounties on your head," I finished.

"Yes, that," He nodded. "What's it to you?"

"Just cashing in on an old favor," I answered.
