No one but Soap knew you'd decided not to go through with it. You trusted him not to call you stupid in ten different ways, even if his opinion was written all over his face. Soap never held back his thoughts about your boyfriend, but it was the way he delivered them—quiet, measured, and with just enough tact—that made it tolerable.
You had to tell someone. These things weren't the kind of secrets you could bury deep inside without feeling the weight crush you. Still, you'd begged Soap to keep it between the two of you. You couldn't let anyone else know you'd decided to stay, least of all Keegan.
Keegan. Just thinking about his reaction made your stomach twist. You could still hear the sharpness in his voice from the last time he found out. His words had cut through the air like shrapnel, leaving the fallout to settle in your chest long after he stormed off.
You had thought about what happened after that moment, of course. The way his hands had felt on your skin. The words that made you feel something. The words that made you feel special.
You had tried to fix things, tried to talk to Keegan more, to see him more. But he ended up being sent on a mission that lasted over a month. Without him around, falling back into old patterns with your boyfriend was all too easy.
That silence—his absence—only made it easier for your boyfriend to worm his way back in.
A bouquet of flowers arrived the first week you had been left alone. Two weeks later, your boyfriend showed up at your door with an apology heavy with sugar-coated words that fell exactly where they needed to. When you'd felt at your lowest, he'd been there with promises of change, with warmth you so desperately craved.
Who were you to say no?
It was hard being alone, especially in this field where loneliness crept in like a thief, unnoticed until it claimed every corner of your body.
You'd known your boyfriend for more than five years. He was familiar, steady in a way that felt safe even when it wasn't.
So, of course, you stayed. Of course, you gave him another chance. Letting people go had never been your strong suit anyway.
"Are you going to focus, or what?" Keegan's voice snaps you out of it, and your focus is immediately back, right to where he wants it.
He had been back for five days now, but the first four days of his return were reserved for some off time.
Today was the first day you had seen him, and apart from a glance here and there, you two hadn't seen each other since last time. You hadn't talked about what happened, and you thought you were fine with that. But now, seeing him in person on the training field, something felt off.
"—Yeah," you respond when you notice you've been quiet too long. "Sorry."
"What's up with you?" he asks, turning fully to face you. His tone is hard to pin down. Is he annoyed that you're distracted? Worried something's wrong?
"Nothing," you say quickly, then falter. "I just... I don't know."
"Come by my room after dinner. We need to talk," he says firmly. "Yeah?"
Suddenly, your nerves kick in. You've avoided him as long as possible, but now there's no escape. For a fleeting moment, you hope your boyfriend won't come up at all—but you know better. You know Keegan better than that.
