••••••••••

I walked into town and went to get some groceries. My mom has been begging me almost the whole day to do it and I finally decided to go get them when it was turning dark. So smart. The doorbells rang as I pushed the door open and walked into the grocery store. Then the bells rang a second time. The air around me turned cold and a chill went down my spine. I looked at the only employee in the store and I could see fear in his eyes. Either is was a fire, or it was a hood. I slowly turned around and met a pair of dark brown eyes. Dallas Winston. I've seen him around town, and god, he didn't have a good reputation at all. But something was different about this. He seemed to share something with that employee. Fear. If Dallas was scared, this couldn't be good. He walked over to the magazines and started to look through them. Dally kept looking up and down and at the employee and I knew Dally was going to try and steal one. He looked me in the eye and I realized I was standing in the middle of an isle looking at him. I turned around and tried to focus on what my mom wanted me to get. I snuck a quick look at Dallas. He was beautiful. The dark , brown, non greasy hair, his eyes, I've never felt this way about anyone else. But Dally would never love a good girl like me. Still in school, straight A's, barely gets in trouble. A JD, drop out, hoodlum like Dally would never look at me twice.

"Are you gonna buy one of those, son?" The employee asked.
"Mhm." Dally mumbled.

He took a couple magazines and ripped them to pieces.

"You know you're going to have to pay for those." The employee pointed out.
"I don't care." Dally said under his breath, but loud enough for me to hear.

Dallas took out a gun and held it up to the employees temple. Now that's the Dally I've heard about.

"Give me the money." Dally murmured.
"Wha?" The employee asked, shaking.
"Give me the money!"
"Dallas! You don't have to do this." I spoke up.
"Yes, I do."
"No, you don't understand. What ever happened couldn't have been that bad. And even if it was, it doesn't mean you have to go rob a store! Do you really want to get yourself killed? Look at you. You're holding a gun up to a poor mans head. He doesn't deserve this! Neither do you! Look, I thought you were something special in my eyes. This, is just wrong. Dally, please, just put the gun away." I pleaded.

Dally took the gun away from the mans head but still had the money in his hands. Then, he pointed the gun at me.

"What did you say to me?" He sneered.

I was speechless. I saw the employee take out a gun of his own and fire at Dally three times, hitting him once in the stomach. Dallas dashed out of the store and down the road. The employee called the police and asked me if I was okay. I nodded and ran out of the store.

"Are you going after him?" The employee yelled.
"Yep!" I screamed back.

I couldn't let this boy get in trouble. Even if it was his fault, I knew deep down in there there was part of him that didn't want him to do it. The reason couldn't be that bad, could
it? It's not like his family died of
something. Hopefully.

"Dally!" I screamed when I saw him calling someone at a phone booth.
"Not you again." I heard him murmur.
"Stop, please. The reason for this couldn't be so bad. Tell me what happened and I could help you. Please Dally, for me." I teared up.
"Look, I don't want to..."
"Dallas! Please." I started to cry. I liked this boy, I couldn't help it! I just couldn't deal with him messing his life up because of something that is probably stupid. Even if his family died, they didn't care about him and he didn't care about them.

"Johnny died, okay? He was my best buddy in the gang. Ponyboy and him were really close, closer than me and Johnny, but he was the only thing that I loved. And he's gone. So why not me too? At least I'll get to see him again."

I couldn't speak. Johnny dead? I've heard of him. He was like the gangs pet or something. Dallas really seemed to care about him.

"Well if you are doing all of this because of Johnny's death," I started. I saw Dally flinch at the word death. "I don't think it is worth it. Wouldn't you think Johnny would want you to live? He wouldn't want you to die because of him."

Something changed in Dally's eyes. "I need to go."

He ran off into the darkness towards the park. I heard sirens and knew this wasn't good. I chased after him and saw him pull a gun out and pointed it at the fuzz.

"You blasted fool." Someone murmured. It was the gang standing right next to me. I looked at Dally and saw that the gun didn't even have a bullet loaded. It must be empty. A bluff. But the fuzz wouldn't know that. Then I realized, that's how he would kill himself.

"No! Don't shoot!" I screamed. I walked in front of Dallas.
"He almost shot one of our officers."
"The gun isn't loaded." I took the gun from Dally's hand and showed the fun that it was just a bluff.
"He still robbed a store. We have to arrest him for an action like that." One of the fuzz said.
"Can you give me some time to talk to Dally before you take him away?" I asked. An officer nodded.

"Dally," I started.
"What the hell was that..."
"Jade. My names Jade."
"Well, Jade, what did you think you were doing?" Dallas yelled in my face.
"Dally, calm down will ya?" Someone from his gang spoke up.

Dallas ignored him. He just kept staring at me.

"I wanted to die. I wanted to get away from this pain!"
"Please stop this. You would be better off." I bawled.
"I can't stand girls crying." Dally chucked, breaking the tension. "I just don't know what to do when they cry."

I let out a little giggle.

"You know, you are very beautiful."

I was in awe. Dally thought I was beautiful? I must be imagining.

"Can you promise me one thing?" He asked. "Don't go out and risk your life for people you barely know." He smiled.
"But what if it's you I'm saving?" I asked.
"I gotta say, I don't think I'm a stranger to you anymore." He grinned.
"Okay, I can make that promise. But I need something from you in return. Please don't try and kill yourself when times get tough. Trust me, I know life might get to a point when you think the world is better without you and you're in too much pain. But life gets better."
"Sure. I promise." Dallas responded.

I've been known as the quiet girl. The shy one. The girl who has no friends. I've been hating my life. But what just happened here, this makes me want to stay. Dally. I didn't just save his life, he saved mine too.
