Carlos's apartment overlooked the winding streets of Monaco, bathed in the soft glow of streetlights reflecting off the rain-slicked cobblestones. The large bay window offered a spectacular view of the port, but tonight, Carlos seemed to ignore it. Seated on the windowsill, he gazed down at the city, one hand resting on a cup of cold tea, the other fidgeting with a bracelet.
In the living room, Lando wandered around in socks, rummaging through the kitchen cupboard. The faint sound of crinkling wrappers echoed as he searched for something to snack on. When he finally stood up with a packet of biscuits in hand, he noticed Carlos's stillness. His brow furrowed slightly as he crossed the room and dropped onto the couch near the window.
"Carlos, you haven't said a word since I got back," Lando said, biting into a biscuit. "What's on your mind? What are you thinking about?"
Carlos barely turned his head, his gaze still fixed on the rain outside.
Lando put the biscuit packet down on the coffee table, folding his arms across the back of the couch as he leaned toward him. "Okay, it's official. Something's up. So talk to me."
Carlos stayed quiet for a moment before sighing. "I had a dream."
Lando raised an eyebrow, intrigued. "A bad dream? What was it? Did you lose to me at Mario Kart again?"
A fleeting smile crossed Carlos's lips but disappeared just as quickly. "No, not that kind of dream. It was different."
"Tell me," Lando urged, his tone softening.
Carlos sat up slightly, his eyes still on the rain. "In the dream, you and I... we had to say goodbye. But not because of a fight or something stupid. It was just the end of everything. Like the whole world was collapsing around us. And..." He hesitated, his voice dropping. "I couldn't do anything about it. It felt completely out of my control."
Lando watched him closely, resting his chin on his arms. "And then?"
Carlos finally turned his head to meet Lando's gaze. "I woke up with this feeling... this emptiness. Like I'd really lost you. And it made me think. If everything ended tomorrow, if our world fell apart, what would be left of all this?"
A heavy silence settled between them, broken only by the ticking clock and the distant sound of cars below.
"You want to know what would be left?" Lando finally said, his tone calm but resolute. "You and me." He sat up straighter, his gaze steady. "If the world was ending tomorrow, if everything fell apart. "If the world was ending, I'd wanna be next to you."
Carlos felt his throat tighten at those words. He set his cup down on the windowsill and turned fully toward Lando, his gaze intense but softened by emotion.
"And if the party was over, if our time on Earth came to an end... I'd wanna hold you just for a while and die with a smile."
The silence that followed was thick with meaning, but it wasn't heavy. Lando got up slowly and walked over to Carlos, placing a hand on his shoulder with a small, sincere smile.
"You know what? The next time you have a terrible dream like that, wake me up," he said with a quiet laugh. "We'll face it together. And maybe find something better to do than dream about the end of the world, yeah?"
Carlos chuckled softly, the tension breaking. "You're saying that? The guy who dreams about being chased by giant cars?"
"Hey, at least my dreams are creative," Lando shot back, his eyes sparkling.
He sat back down on the couch, gesturing toward the kitchen. "So, what are we eating? Because I'm starving, and our fridge is emptier than your chances of beating me at Mario Kart."
Carlos rolled his eyes, amused, as he grabbed his phone from the table. "Pizza?"
"Extra cheese," Lando said enthusiastically, tucking his legs under himself.
And as the rain continued to fall on the rooftops of Monaco, their little world, perched above the port, felt steadier than ever. The future might be uncertain, but for tonight, none of that mattered.
