Companion Song: Kiss Me by Sixpence None The Richer

My nose presses against the glass of the passenger seat window in my dad's Subaru Outback so close a circle of fog surrounds my face. I hear a chuckle from the driver's seat.

"Rosey, you have four years to look at the city. Pace yourself" says Dad.

Today is move-in day. If you would have told me four years ago that I would be moving all the way from Tennessee to New York City for one of the most prestigious universities in the country I don't know if I would have believed you.

NYU became my dream school in sophomore year, my bedroom gradually filling with posters, pictures, and symbols of the big apple. And now I am really here.

When we finally get to Hastings Hall, we are greeted by a peppy girl wearing a purple polo with the letters "NYU" etched onto the chest.

"Hi guys! My name is Anne and I'll be helping you into the dorm today. So who is our lucky new bobcat?" she asks with so much cheer it makes my stomach hurt.

I shyly step in front of my brother Aidan and my parents.

"I'm Rose, I think I should be on the fourth floor of Hastings!" I say trying to match the excitement level.

Anne scans her clipboard and taps it with her pen.

"Yep! I see you're in room 405. If you head right to those doors, the NYU soccer team is waiting to help load your belongings up. Have a great rest of your day and come back to see me if you end up needing anything at all!" she says pointing at a group of tan well built boys in NYU soccer shirts.

I smile at Anne and start heading towards the intimidating crowd of older college boys with my family following behind me.

"It's nice that they have the athletic teams help out with move-in, don't you think?" my mom says in that sweet southern twang she could never seem to shake.

We all nod our heads in agreement as we head over to the crowd.

My gaze is drawn to one of the boys who is goofing around loudly. He has Patrick in big white letters on the back of his t-shirt. He almost bumps into a pair of parents and I chuckle under my breath.

My dad and Aidan direct some of the teammates over to our car and start unloading. Mom and I head up to inspect the room.

When we open the door we are ambushed with a sea of pink. Half of the room is covered in Lana Del Rey posters, cherry shaped pillows, and a bright pink comforter. My roommate Cassie must have beat me here.

I met Cassie through the roommate match site and we talked all summer. It seemed like we'd be a great match and her music taste definitely shows that we'll get along. We're both huge Lana fans and she's also from the south. Her family is from Biltmore, North Carolina. While we both come from the same region, Biltmore is much different than small town Tennessee. Regardless, she doesn't seem to be worried about all that status stuff, so I am excited to start the year with her.

After setting up my room, my mom suggests we grab something to eat before my family heads to their hotel.

"Oh yes, all this moving has starveddd me." Aidan remarks

"I saw a nice Italian place on the way, does that sound good?" says Dad

I nod in agreement, as I am also starving after this long day.

We sit down in the restaurant and I look around at all these New Yorkers. The women look so put together and confident, I can only wish to be like that by the time I graduate.

I am snapped out of my daydream when my mom lets out a small sigh at the prices on the menu. I give her a reassuring smile and scan the menu for the cheapest pasta dish.

We eat until our stomachs are full and happy, laughing and chatting about the upcoming school year. I am going to miss this.

Before I know it my family is dropping me off at the entrance to Hastings and I give them all a big hug, trying to choke back the tears that are threatening my eyes.

"I love you Rosey" my Dad whispers in my ear as I fear a tear slide down his cheek and land on my shoulder.

I say my goodbyes and turn on my heel towards my new life, careful not to look back and prolong the sadness.
