Five years later
Rosie jolted awake, a strangled gasp escaping her lips as icy terror clung to her skin. Her hand flew to her chest, fingers digging into the soft fabric of the black t-shirt she Borrowed from her husband as she fought for breath. The nightmare, vivid and terrifying, still clung to her consciousness, leaving a tremor in her limbs and a cold sweat prickling her forehead. Tyler Owens, her husband, stirred beside her, his own sleep disturbed by her sudden distress. He sat up, concern etched on his usually relaxed features, and gently reached for her. "Hey, it's okay," he murmured, his voice a soothing balm in the tense silence. "It was just a nightmare." His warm hand found hers, his touch grounding her slowly, pulling her back from the precipice of fear.
His voice laced with concern as he gently stroked her hair, "Was it the same nightmare?" he asked, a hint of apprehension in his tone, his heart aching at the sight of his wife's distress. The question hung in the air, a silent acknowledgment of the recurring terror that had begun to plague her nights. Every time the shadows stretched across their bedroom, he could feel her tension rising, a palpable fear that seemed to seep into the very walls around them. He watched as her brow creased with each phantom echo of her dreams, and it shattered something within him to know that sleep, a sanctuary for most, had morphed into a chamber of horrors for her.
"I still see them Dying, and I couldn't save them," she told him, her voice barely a whisper, laden with the weight of loss. The vivid images played relentlessly behind her eyelids, tormenting her with visions of lives left unprotected, of faces that sought solace in her presence yet found only darkness. He wished he could somehow reach into her dreams, to banish the nightmares that loomed larger than reality, but each time she opened her eyes, he felt more helpless. As he held her close, the rhythm of her breath a fragile lullaby, he made a silent promise to be her anchor through the stormy seas of her mind, to stand guard against the shadows that threatened to take her once again. Together, they would navigate this labyrinth of grief and guilt, and perhaps, in that shared battle, she might one day find peace. A year after they first met, she married him two months after telling him what had happened five years prior.
