It was cold. Uncomfortably cold.
Abhishek blinked, trying to make sense of his surroundings. He stood on a beach, the soft sand beneath his bare feet, but something was off.
The air didn't feel like it should—it was too still, too quiet, as if the world had paused. There was no sun, no clouds, just a pale blue sky that hung overhead like stagnant water.
He stepped forward, his feet sinking into the warm sand, yet an unsettling chill clung to his skin. His body felt heavy, weighed down by the silence that enveloped him. The ocean stretched out on all sides, the surface unnaturally calm, but he felt the tension lurking beneath the water.
In the distance, a figure stood with her back to him.
Sofia....
Her hair moved gently with the breeze as she held a single flower in her hand. Abhi's breath hitch. TIDES - she was standing close, he realized now that her lower body was submerged in water.
A sense of dread clawed at his chest.
She turned slowly, her face serene, as if she hadn't noticed the chaos surrounding her. The rising tides behind her loomed like giant hands ready to pull her under. Still, she smiled.
"For me?" Sofia asked, lifting the flower towards him. Her voice was distant, echoing unnaturally across the empty beach.
Abhishek blinked, his mind foggy, unsure of what to say. Something about the moment felt wrong. Very wrong
Sofia smiles. She looks beautiful. Abhishek thinks, even with the scary tides behind her she looks too composed and calm.
"For me." Sofia repeats and this time it wasn't a question.
Abhishek nodded slowly, feeling like he was trapped in someone else's dream. "For you," he whispered, the words falling from his lips without meaning as he recognizes the flower, a faint memory lingering with them in his mind.
Her smile widens, almost too much that it appears predatory.
Abhishek wanted to walk towards her and touch her. But he couldn't move. A look of confusion etched on his face. The waves surrounding them got aggressively wild.
Sofia's lip twitches into a smirk. She turns around and walks deeper into the ocean towards the tides.
"No!" Abhishek shouted, his body jerking into motion. He sprinted towards her, his feet slamming into the wet sand. The cold water rushed around his ankles, rising fast. Sofia kept walking, the tides swallowing her bit by bit.
He tried to catch up, the waves pulling at his legs, dragging him down. The water was freezing, his breath becoming ragged as panic surged through him.
"Sofia, stop!" he gasped, but she was slipping further away, the waves rising higher.
His lungs burned as the icy water covered him, crashing over his head. He fought, struggling to keep afloat, but the undercurrent was too strong, yanking him under.
He couldn't breathe.
The world became a blur of blue and white as the water consumed him, salt stinging his eyes, his body sinking into the depths. His limbs flailed, trying desperately to swim back up, but every time he surfaced for a breath, another wave smashed him back down.
Abhishek's head broke the surface for a brief moment, and through the crashing water, he saw her—Sofia, standing calmly just out of reach.
The water reaches slightly above her neck, droplets of water sliding down her cheeks.
Sofia swims closer to him until they are only a step apart. She holds Abhishek's hand, the look in her eyes softer now with a small smile playing on her lips.
She stares at Abhishek for a brief moment with a look that makes him shiver, as if conveying a cryptic message.
And then slowly Sofia starts to sink down, Holding Abhishek's hand firmly, not letting him go.
"Drown with me, Abhi," she whispered, her voice a soft command, almost tender.
All of a sudden, Abhishek's body felt heavy as he's too pulled along with Sofia and sinking into the deep ocean.
Abhishek could see the blue water more clearly now, until the point where he could see the shore at a distance below.
It hurts just as before, the burn in the lungs is still the same.
Abhishek's desperate eyes meet that of Sofia's calm ones, only for his questioning mind to be met with more questions.
Sofia closes her eyes, leaning towards him as her lips meet his forehead, pressing a soft kiss before pulling away. She swipes her fingers tenderly over Abhishek's cheeks, softly holding his chin.
'Drown for me, will you?." she asked, scanning his face for any sort of answer.
Abhishek's lungs hurt. He could feel the warn tears sliding down his cheek even under the water.
" You will, I know."
Abhishek breathes in, the water entering his lungs now more freely.
Sofia smiles.
Abhidhek could feel the warmth of tears streaming down his face, even as the ocean swallowed him whole. But the strangest part wasn't the pain—it was the relief
It was weird, he thinks, that it hurts so much when he was trying to stay alive but this changes, all the pain , all the burn disappeared as soon as the water filled his lungs, as soon as he gave up.
So he drowns exactly how Sofia wants him to.
Just before everything turns black, before his eyes flutter shut he realizes -
"He was not the only one crying."
