Silas - August 2024

The morning sun filtered through the gray curtains, casting a soft golden glow that flickered as the fabric fluttered gently in the breeze. Its light stretched across the room, bathing the bed in a warm hue, where a black blanket lay crumpled in an unceremonious heap. Beneath it, Silas— a grey and white wolf—emerged from his slumber, his disheveled fur a testament to an epic battle with his pillow.

With a deep, satisfied yawn, he stretched languidly, his body slowly coming to life as he rose from the bed.

As the drowsiness began to wear off, Silas shuffled to the bathroom, still half-asleep. He turned on the faucet and cupped his hands under the rushing water, splashing his face. The coolness jolted him awake, but the blurry remnants of sleep still clung to his mind. Rubbing his eyes with the back of his paw, he reached for a towel, attempting to dry off the lingering water.

Just as he was about to head back to the bedroom, his phone buzzed from his pocket. Silas groaned, fishing it out lazily and answering.

The moment the line connected, an angry shout blasted through the receiver.

"WHAT ARE YOU DOING? HURRY UP OR WE'LL BE LATE!" The voice was unmistakable—Daniel, and it was full of fire.

Silas blinked, his mind still sluggish. "What do you mean? It's only 7:30 AM..."

The phone fell silent for a beat before the realization hit like a freight train.

"Shit!" Silas exclaimed, his heart leaping in his chest. In a rush, he dropped the phone and scrambled back into the bathroom, his foot slipping on the wet tile. He crashed into the floor with an exaggerated curse, the slap of his paws against the hard surface the only sound filling the room.

With no time to waste, Silas hopped up, swiftly changed into his clothes, and grabbed a large suitcase. He bolted out the door, his fur still wild and untamed from sleep.

Outside, Daniel—towering over six feet tall, a sleek amber-eyed tiger—was already in the car, his hand gripping the horn in a frantic rhythm.

"Get in!" Daniel barked, the urgency in his tone impossible to ignore.

Silas barely had time to catch his breath before they were on the road, leaving the familiar streets behind as they headed toward their new life in Ohio. The journey ahead stretched for hours, but the excitement in Silas's chest made the long drive seem shorter.

Daniel grinned from the driver's seat, his amber eyes flashing as he navigated the highways with ease. "I swear, if you hadn't taken so long to wake up, we'd have made better time," he teased, his voice full of playful irritation.

"Yeah, yeah," Silas muttered, settling back in the passenger seat. "But at least we're on the road now."

The hours rolled by as the car hummed along the interstate, the landscape outside shifting from the familiar suburbs to the open, sprawling countryside. They traded jokes and stories, the distance between their small hometown and the looming college campus feeling less daunting with every mile.

Eventually, the road signs began to change, indicating they were approaching their destination. Silas's pulse quickened as he saw the first signs for Ohio, and before long, the city skyline appeared in the distance. The gray towers of GreyHound College of Architecture and the Arts stood tall against the horizon, a beacon of new beginnings.

They pulled into the parking lot, the weight of their journey still fresh, but the excitement of what was to come began to take hold.

The campus was everything they had imagined—breathtaking, vast, and filled with potential. Tall, modern buildings were dotted with lush greenery and stone walkways that led in every direction. Silas felt a sense of awe as he and Daniel unloaded their luggage from the car, excitement bubbling in his chest. They would be living here for the next few years, carving out their futures in this ambitious academic space.

After checking in, they made their way to their dorm buildings. The air had cooled as evening began to set in, and the sun cast a warm, amber glow over the campus. The nerves started to settle as they approached their new home—Silas feeling a mixture of excitement and mild anxiety.

They entered their building and took the elevator to the second floor, where their dorm rooms awaited them. Silas had been given a shared room, which, from the online pictures, looked comfortable enough.

The elevator doors opened with a soft ping, and they walked down the hallway to room 208. Silas's heart was pounding as they approached, the newness of everything starting to feel real. He stood in front of the door for a moment, exhaling a deep breath, before knocking lightly.

Inside, the room was quiet, save for the soft rustling of pages being turned. A faint smell of lavender and ink lingered in the air, soothing and calm. The door creaked open, and a small fox with a white coat and a thick, bushy tail poked his head out from behind a half-open door.

"Hi, uh, are you Silas?" the fox asked in a soft, almost nervous tone. He looked up at Silas with wide, bright eyes that were framed by the black tips of his ears. His posture was slightly stiff, as though he was unsure of how to greet his new roommate.

"Yeah," Silas answered, offering a smile. "You must be Kael, right?"

The fox hesitated for a moment before nodding. "Yeah, I'm Kael," he said, his voice still a little shy. Then, after a pause, he added, "Nice to meet you."

Silas extended his paw, a friendly gesture to break the ice. "Nice to meet you too," he said, trying to ease the awkwardness that seemed to hang in the air. As he reached forward to shake Kael's paw, he could feel the tension in the room. The fox's grip was tentative, almost as if he wasn't entirely sure how to approach this new situation.

After the brief handshake, there was an awkward silence that filled the space between them. Silas, trying to break the tension, stepped past Kael and moved toward the empty side of the room. He had barely begun to unpack when Kael spoke again.

"Uh, do you want some help with that?" Kael offered, his voice still a little uncertain but kind.

Silas chuckled lightly, grateful for the offer but feeling the strange quietness lingering. "No, it's alright, I got it," he said, pulling his suitcase open and beginning to sort through his clothes. As he unpacked, he glanced over at Kael, who was now sitting on his bed, looking back at him with a mixture of curiosity and caution.

Both of them fell into an uneasy silence again, each lost in their thoughts. The weight of the unknown—the first day in a new place, with a new roommate—hung in the air, leaving both of them unsure of what to expect next. The room was small, but the space between them felt larger than it should.

As Silas finished unpacking, he stood by the window, gazing out at the campus below. The night had fallen, and the world outside felt quiet and vast. The distant sounds of laughter and chatter floated up from below, a reminder that they weren't alone in this new chapter.

Kael shifted uncomfortably on his bed before speaking again, this time with more warmth. "So... what major are you doing?" he asked, clearly making an effort to start a conversation.

Silas smiled and turned back to Kael. "Architecture," he replied. "What about you?"

Kael's face lit up a little. "Art," he said, almost proudly. "I've been into drawing and sculpture for as long as I can remember."

"Cool," Silas said, nodding in approval. "I bet we'll get along just fine, then. I could use an artist's touch on some of my designs."

Kael's ears perked up at that, and a small smile played at the corners of his mouth. "I'd like that," he said quietly.

And with that, the ice between them began to thaw. Though they were still learning about each other, something about their shared futures—this new adventure—felt promising.

The awkwardness didn't completely disappear, but it was easier now, and the possibility of a friendship, a partnership even, started to take shape as they settled into their new space together.
