Kael's blue eyes fluttered open first, the soft light of the morning creeping into the room and gently nudging him awake. He blinked a few times, adjusting to the warmth and comfort surrounding him. As he became more aware, he realized that his head was resting on Silas's chest, his arm wrapped around Silas's waist. The sound of Silas's steady heartbeat beneath his ear was soothing, and for a brief moment, Kael felt completely at ease.
His tail flicked slightly under the covers, the sensation of Silas's warmth radiating through him. It was still early, and Kael didn't want to move—didn't want to break the calm silence of the moment.
But he knew he had to. His 9 a.m. class wasn't going to wait.
Kael sighed softly, not wanting to disturb the peacefulness of the moment but knowing that he had to get up soon. He shifted slightly, lifting his head from Silas's chest and glancing over at the clock on the nearby desk. The time was already creeping closer to when he needed to leave.
Silas remained still, his arm still loosely draped over Kael's body, his face relaxed in sleep. Kael gently nudged him, brushing his fingers over Silas's arm. "Silas," he murmured quietly, hoping to wake him without disturbing the calm too much.
Silas stirred at the sound of Kael's voice, his amber eyes blinking open slowly. He let out a soft yawn, a lazy smile tugging at the corner of his lips as he saw Kael awake first for once.
"Morning," Kael greeted, his voice quiet but warm.
Silas yawned again, still half asleep. "Morning... Did I actually sleep through my alarm?" He asked, his voice slightly muffled by the sleepiness.
Kael chuckled lightly. "Nah, you're fine. But you're going to have to get up soon," he said, his voice tinged with a teasing note. "I've got class in 30 minutes, and I'm not walking there alone."
Silas groaned, his arms tightening around Kael for a moment before he released him. "Alright, alright, I'm up," he muttered, rubbing his eyes. "You're lucky I don't have anything until after lunch today."
Kael smiled, enjoying the rare feeling of being the one to get up first for a change. He moved to get off the couch, stretching his arms above his head as he made his way to gather his things for class. Silas sat up slowly, yawning again before running a hand through his messy hair.
Kael paused at the door, glancing back at Silas with a smirk. "You walking me today, or do I have to make the trek alone?"
Silas smiled sleepily, standing up and stretching himself. "Of course I'll walk you. No way I'm letting you go alone." He grabbed his jacket from the back of a chair and slipped it on, following Kael out of the dorm room.
The morning air outside was still cool, and the campus was relatively quiet, with most students still recovering from the weekend. As they walked side by side, Kael and Silas fell into their usual easy rhythm, the sounds of their footsteps filling the air.
They made small talk about random things—what they might do later, how Kael's class might go, and the fact that Silas was looking forward to having the rest of the day to himself.
When they reached Kael's building, he stopped, turning to face Silas. "Thanks for walking me," he said softly, his voice warm with appreciation.
Silas smiled, his amber eyes softening. "Of course. Good luck in class, Kael. I'll see you later."
Kael gave a small, almost shy smile, his tail flicking slightly behind him. "See you later, Silas."
With a final glance, Kael turned and made his way into the building, leaving Silas standing outside, watching him go. Silas couldn't help but feel a small sense of pride as he saw Kael walking confidently toward his class, his usual guarded demeanor softened by their time together.
