CHAPTER SEVEN "you look so much like your mother"
EVELYN WAKES UP THE NEXT MORNING TO an urgent string of text messages from Pope. She had dropped the trio home last night and gone to sleep fairly content, even if she did get into a fight, and thought that would be the end of it. However, it seems that Rafe and Topper simply wouldn't let this go because JJ Maybank is now in a jail cell.
The brunette had scrambled to get ready and was in her car within ten minutes of waking up, zooming off towards where she believes she would find Pope. Heyward sees her coming, his eyebrows scrunched together in confusion at the sight of her.
"Hi Mr Heyward," Evelyn greets, eyes darting around the shop. "Is Pope here?"
"He's out back," The man gestures towards where his son is and Evelyn gives him a smile of thanks before rushing off.
She spots him pretty quickly, looking incredibly downtrodden and Evelyn can't even imagine what is going through his head right now. He doesn't look up as she approaches, Evelyn can't even be sure that he heard her enter, so she makes sure to not startle him. Laying a gentle hand on his shoulder, Pope meets her gaze finally.
"I got your messages," Evelyn says quietly, sitting down beside him. "I'm really sorry, Pope,"
She doesn't know what else to say to him, what can she possibly say that would make this okay? His best friend is currently sitting in a jail cell because he had taken the fall for him — perhaps a little stupid but Evelyn also finds it incredibly noble too. Every negative thing that people have ever said about the Maybank boy is now completely wiped from her mind, not that she ever really hung onto much of it anyway.
"It's my fault. I should've have sunk that stupid boat," Pope responds, hands clenching into fists.
"They shouldn't have attacked you in the first place. Every part of this rests on Rafe and Topper's shoulders, all of it. If the two of them weren't dicks, then you wouldn't have retaliated," Evelyn tries to assure.
"Oh yeah, I'm sure that'll hold up in a court of law,"
Evelyn knows he's hurting so she doesn't let his tone hurt her, it's not what either of them need right now. Instead, she seeks to comfort him the best she can. Wrapping an arm around his shoulders, she leans his head on his shoulder. After a few moments, he tilts his head as well so it's resting on top of her's.
"JJ will be okay and so will you. Besides, I'm a kook too, surely I have some sort of influence here," The last part comes out teasing, her way of trying to lighten to mood even slightly.
