Emily was sleeping, when she heard the ringing voice of the landline. She opened her eyes with great difficulty and looked toward the wall clock which was telling her that morning had long gone.
She picked up the receiver and said, "Hello."
"Hello, Emily dear." The voice of Ethan Harris hummed out of the receiver and made Emily's sleep go away.
"Hello, Dad... where have you been? I called you so many times... but no one picked it up." Emily said and sat on the bed.
"I was busy... but what was the emergency that you called me for so many times?" Ethan asked out of concern.
"Are you alright?" He asked again.
"Dad, I need to tell you something terrible... Jack Nolan... your foster son... he confessed to killing the eight members of our family." Emily said in a shaky voice.
"Dad, he confessed in front of me," Emily said again and once again tears rolled out of her eyes.
Ethan Harris heard the words of Emily and he became silent then after a few moments, a stunned whisper came out of his mouth and he said,
"What? That's impossible. Jack... Jack was like a son to me... Are you sure?"
"I'm sure, Dad... He confessed it to Dr. Rose Wilson at the psychiatric hospital. He said he did it because of the oppression he felt from our family." Emily said.
"What oppressions?" Ethan asked in an amazed tone.
He was still trying to process that Jack was the killer who mercilessly killed eight members of his family.
"I told you that Jack has put up allegations that he was tortured and abused by the hands of our family members and then one day, under a fit of rage he killed eight of them," Emily said in a low voice.
She had an idea of what kind of pain and despair his father must be experiencing. But she had to tell him everything, as he deserved to know the truth.
"He is telling nothing but rubbish... he is a liar." Ethan Harris said loudly
"Many times, I heard reports about Jack's bad behavior, criminal activities... but I always ignored them... I thought he was a troubled kid, and I would set him on the right path, but this..."
"I know, Dad... he is sick," Emily said, then added, "Dad, listen to me... You and the rest of the family shouldn't come back to Ireland. Jack specifically threatened to kill one more family member... he said that his so-called revenge is still incomplete... so please, Dad, don't come back... He's dangerous."
"Emily, I understand your concern, but I can't just abandon everything... I'm coming back with the family for an award ceremony... I've worked so hard for this, and I won't miss it for anything," Ethan said in a determined tone.
"Dad, this is serious.... I have seen blood in his eyes, and I know he wouldn't hesitate to kill one more person," Emily pleaded.
"Dear, I appreciate your concern, but I won't be deterred... in fact, we are at the airport, and I am calling you from there... we are going to take our flight in one hour... we are coming back," Ethan broke the news, which was quite unexpected for her.
"Please, Dad... think for a moment and postpone your plan," Emily pleaded once again.
"Emily, don't be silly... what harm can a mentally sick person who is caged in a mental asylum do to us?" Ethan Harris said in a serious tone.
"Just be cautious, Dad... I don't want anything to happen to you or anyone in our family," Emily said.
"I'll be fine. We'll talk when I get there. Take care," Ethan Harris said and disconnected the call.
She knew that Dad wasn't going to listen to her, so she had to call Sheriff Sarah and tell her about the arrival of her family to ensure their safety.
