Wonwoo put the unopened pregnancy test back in the bathroom cabinet and did his best to forget about it. The happy afterglow from his heat was gone, leaving cold reality in its wake. For the next few days, he ignored the looks from Minghao and the others and stormed around bad-temperedly as everyone gave him a wide berth. Everyone except Mingyu, that was. The alpha was his constant shadow. It should have been stifling. Instead, he felt protected. He didn’t know how to break the news to Mingyu that they might be bonded. And the other thing—well, he was sure Minghao was wrong about that.
He huddled into his jacket, leaning against the wall of the shed as he watched the snow fall.
“Here.”
A mug was shoved into his hands as Mingyu took up position by his side.
Wonwoo blew on his drink and took a sip.
“Hot chocolate, huh? Not coffee?”
Mingyu made a non-committal noise, and Wonwoo gave him a long look. “Minghao talked to you. When?”
“Day we got back, same as you.”
“You never said.”
“I figured you didn’t need more pressure on your shoulders. You deserved some time to settle back in.”
“I’m not pregnant.”
The alpha nodded, glancing down at his own mug. “You took the test.”
“Um…”
Mingyu looked up, a frown crossing his face. “You did take the test, right?”
“I can’t be pregnant. I told you already, the army has me covered. Babies aren’t something I need to worry about for at least a few more weeks.”
“I know Minghao told you that us being pack makes things different.”
“He might have said something.”
“You don’t believe him?”
“I don’t want to believe him,” he admitted softly. “Because if he’s right… I can’t be pregnant, Mingyu. I’m not safe to be a parent.” He took another sip of his hot chocolate, letting the sweetness soothe him.
“Don’t you think you’ve proved that you can control your anger?”
“You saw what I did to that beta, right? The one in the van?”
Mingyu quirked an eyebrow. “The one very much alive, if a little banged up? Yeah, I saw him.”
“I attacked him.”
“You took him out of the equation so you could escape. By anyone’s definition, that’s self-defense. More than that, you could have killed him, and no one would have faulted you for it. But you didn’t. You showed admirable control and restraint.”
“You give me too much credit,” he whispered.
“No. You don’t give yourself enough.” Mingyu bumped him gently. “Finish your hot chocolate. Then you and I are going to go for a run.”
Wonwoo made a face. “Running isn’t the solution to all of life’s problems, you know.”
“Well, it’s a start. And it’s better than stomping around with a frown on your face. Go on, throw on something more comfortable and let’s get moving.”
Grumbling, Wonwoo headed inside and got into a pair of sweatpants, a T-shirt, and a sweatshirt. Mingyu was waiting for him by the front door, looking far too chipper considering how cold it was outside.
