The "breakup announcement" text had been sent, and Max and Charles spent the next hour watching Netflix, fully prepared to let their prank simmer. They figured Lando would stew on it for a bit, maybe send a couple of confused messages, and then they’d let him off the hook.
What they didn’t anticipate was the rapid knock on their door thirty minutes later.
“Uh… who’s that?” Charles asked, glancing toward the door.
Max frowned. “No idea. Did you order food already?”
“No,” Charles replied, standing up. He peeked through the peephole, then froze. “It’s Lando.”
Max bolted upright. “Wait, what?!”
“Open up!” Lando’s voice came through the door, high-pitched and panicked. “I know you’re both in there! You can’t just break up and not talk to me about it!”
Charles turned to Max, wide-eyed. “What do we do?”
Max grabbed the nearest blanket and threw it over his head like a terrible disguise. “You answer it. I’m not dealing with this.”
Charles rolled his eyes but opened the door, trying to keep a straight face.
Lando barged in, looking frazzled and carrying what appeared to be a “relationship repair kit”—a box of chocolates, a bottle of sparkling cider, and two matching stuffed animals.
“Okay, sit down,” Lando demanded, pointing to the couch. “We’re fixing this right now.”
“Fixing what?” Charles asked, trying to sound confused.
“Your relationship!” Lando exclaimed, dumping his supplies on the coffee table. “You two are, like, the only stable couple I know. If you guys can’t make it, what hope do the rest of us have?!”
Max, still hiding under the blanket, mumbled, “We were never that stable.”
Lando ignored him. “Okay, first things first.” He opened the box of chocolates and handed one to Charles. “Chocolate for endorphins. It’s scientifically proven to make people happier. Eat it.”
Charles obediently took the chocolate, biting his lip to keep from laughing.
“Max, you too,” Lando said, yanking the blanket off Max’s head and shoving a chocolate in his face.
Max took it reluctantly, muttering, “I didn’t ask for therapy.”
Lando clapped his hands together. “Right, now that we’re chemically happier, let’s talk about why you broke up. Communication is key.”
Charles and Max exchanged a glance, both trying not to burst out laughing.
“It was… irreconcilable differences,” Charles said solemnly.
Lando gasped. “No! What kind of differences?!”
Charles pretended to think. “Well, he doesn’t like pineapple on pizza, and I do.”
“That’s it?” Lando looked genuinely horrified. “You broke up over pizza toppings?”
Max shrugged, playing along. “It was the last straw.”
Lando smacked his forehead. “Oh my god. You two are ridiculous. Okay, fine. Compromise. You can get half pineapple and half not. Problem solved.”
Charles nodded thoughtfully. “Hmm. That could work.”
“See?” Lando said triumphantly. “Now, let’s talk about forgiveness. Max, apologize for whatever dumb thing you did.”
Max raised an eyebrow. “Why do you assume it was me?”
“Because it’s always you,” Lando said, crossing his arms.
Charles snorted. “Fair point.”
Max rolled his eyes but leaned over to Charles, placing a hand on his shoulder. “I’m sorry for… not liking pineapple on pizza.”
“And?” Lando prompted.
“And for stealing your blanket last night,” Max added with a smirk.
Charles grinned. “Apology accepted.”
Lando sighed with relief. “Finally. Now, to seal the deal…” He grabbed the two stuffed animals—a bear and a lion—and handed one to each of them. “These represent your love. Don’t let go of them.”
Charles held up the bear, biting back laughter. “This is adorable.”
“It’s symbolic,” Lando insisted. “You two need to hold onto each other like these bears—wait, what’s so funny?”
Max couldn’t hold it in anymore and burst out laughing. “Lando, we didn’t break up!”
Lando blinked, his jaw dropping. “What?”
“It was a prank,” Charles said, laughing so hard he had to sit down. “We thought it would be funny to see how you’d react.”
Lando stared at them, his face a mix of betrayal and disbelief. “You… you pranked me?!”
Max nodded, wiping tears of laughter from his eyes. “And you fell for it. Big time.”
Lando looked at the stuffed animals, the chocolates, and the sparkling cider, then back at them. “I can’t believe I wasted my afternoon trying to save a relationship that doesn’t need saving!”
Charles patted his shoulder. “But you were so sweet about it. Really, we appreciate the effort.”
Lando huffed but couldn’t help smiling. “You guys suck. But also, you’re kind of perfect for each other, so… whatever.”
Max grinned. “Thanks, Lando. Want to stay for pizza? We’ll get half pineapple, half not.”
Lando rolled his eyes but sat down. “Fine. But I’m keeping one of these stuffed animals as compensation for my emotional distress.”
Charles handed him the lion. “Deal.”
And so, the evening ended with pizza, laughter, and a very relieved Lando, who made them promise never to prank him again. (They didn’t mean it.)
For Max and Charles, it was just another chapter in their chaotic, wonderful life together—one that always seemed to involve a little mischief, a lot of love, and the best kind of friends.
