Chapter Ten: Questions and Chaos
The room was suffocating, the tension so thick it was as if the walls were closing in. Agatha stood frozen for a moment, her sharp eyes locked on the locket swaying gently against Nessa's chest. Then with startling urgency, she dropped to her knees in front of the salt circle, her voice sharp and demanding.
"Where did you get that?" she barked, pointing at the necklace as if it were cursed.
Nessa flinched, her exhaustion replaced by sheer panic. "W-what?" she stammered, clutching the locket instinctively.
"The necklace!" Agatha snapped, her voice rising. "Where did you get it? Who gave it to you?"
"Agatha," Rio interjected, her voice low but firm as she stepped closer. "What's going on?"
Agatha ignored her, her focus entirely on Nessa. "Answer me!" she demanded, her tone verging on desperation. "Who gave that to you? Where did you find it?"
Nessa's breath hitched as tears pricked her eyes. She felt trapped, not just by the salt circle but by the overwhelming presence of the two women bearing down on her. "I-I've always had it!" she cried, her voice trembling. "It's mine! I don't know where it came from it's just always been with me!"
"Always?" Agatha repeated, her voice softening just slightly as if she were trying to make sense of something impossible. "Since when? Since you were a child? Since you were born?"
"Yes!" Nessa snapped, her fear giving way to frustration. "I don't know, okay? I don't remember anyone giving it to me it's just... mine!"
"Agatha," Rio said again, louder this time. She placed a hand on Agatha's shoulder, but the witch shrugged it off without a glance.
Rio's patience frayed. "What the hell is going on?" she asked, her voice sharp. "Why are you acting like that necklace is the end of the world?"
Agatha's head snapped toward Rio, her eyes blazing with a mix of emotions that Rio couldn't quite place. "Not now," she hissed, before turning back to Nessa.
Rio's jaw tightened, but she took a step back, her arms crossed as she watched the scene unfold.
Nessa's tears spilled over as she stared at the two women. "Who are you people?" she demanded, her voice breaking. "Why are you doing this to me? I didn't ask to be here I don't even know who you are!"
Agatha's hands clenched into fists at her sides. Her mind raced, each word out of Nessa's mouth adding another layer to the mystery unraveling before her. The locket was unmistakable. It was the same one she had crafted years ago a relic tied to her deepest secrets, secrets she had buried long ago.
"Who are you?" Agatha asked, her voice quieter now but no less intense. Her eyes bore into Nessa's, searching for something... anything that could explain the impossible.
Nessa shook her head, her tears streaming freely now. "I don't know!" she cried. "I'm nobody! I'm just... I'm just trying to find my mom!"
Agatha froze, her breath catching in her throat. For the first time, her confidence faltered, her expression cracking.
"Your mom?" she repeated, her voice barely above a whisper.
Nessa nodded, wiping at her face with trembling hands. "Yes," she said. "She's the only person who can explain any of this. I-I was told she has the same necklace as me, but I don't even know who she is or where to find her!"
The room fell silent, save for Nessa's quiet sobs. Agatha sat back on her heels, her face pale her mind spinning with a thousand possibilities.
Rio's voice broke the silence, calm but insistent. "Agatha," she said, stepping closer again. "You need to tell me what's going on. Now."
But Agatha didn't respond. She didn't even seem to hear Rio. Her gaze remained fixed on Nessa, her lips pressed into a thin line as she struggled to piece together the fragments of a truth she wasn't ready to face.
Rio's patience snapped. "Agatha!" she barked, her voice cutting through the haze.
Still, no answer.
Nessa, overwhelmed and trembling, buried her face in her hands, wishing she could disappear. Whatever she had stumbled into, it was far bigger and far more terrifying than she had ever imagined.
