Chapter Thirty-Six: A Surprise Kiss

The morning sunlight spilled into the tent, warming the air and casting soft patterns across the fabric. Rio sat up, her back resting against the edge of the tent, her sharp eyes fixed on the woman sleeping beside her. Agatha's face was turned slightly to the side, her features relaxed in a way Rio had rarely seen.

For a long moment, Rio simply stared trying to unravel the strange knot of emotions within her. She didn't understand this pull, this magnetic connection to the woman lying so peacefully. It wasn't just familiarity it was something deeper, a whisper of something lost but still lingering.

Her gaze drifted to Agatha's hair, messy and wild from sleep, a lock falling across her cheek. Without thinking, Rio reached out and gently tucked it behind her ear. Her fingers lingered, the brief contact sparking an ache she couldn't explain. She withdrew her hand, letting it rest on her lap, but her eyes never left Agatha's face.

Why does this feel so... natural? Rio thought, her brow furrowing. She didn't remember this woman, yet being here, next to her felt like a puzzle piece clicking into place. The longer she stared, the more she realized she didn't want to look away.

Before she could stop herself, Rio leaned forward closing the distance slightly and slipped an arm around Agatha, pulling her closer. She felt the warmth of her body, the soft rise and fall of her chest as she slept. Rio wasn't sure why she did it she only knew it felt right.

Agatha stirred, her lashes fluttering as she slowly awoke. Her head tilted up, her gaze meeting Rio's. A small smile touched her lips as if the sight of Rio holding her was the most natural thing in the world. Without hesitation, without thought Agatha leaned forward and pressed her lips to Rio's in a soft, tender kiss.

The contact jolted Rio. She froze, her eyes widening in surprise as Agatha's hand instinctively cupped her cheek. It was warm and familiar, but Rio's mind reeled unsure how to process the sudden intimacy.

Agatha pulled back just as quickly, her expression shifting to panic. "I—Rio, I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to—"

Rio sat up straight, her gaze distant for a moment as she tried to untangle what had just happened. Her fingers brushed against her lips unconsciously, and she turned her eyes back to Agatha who looked ready to crumble.

Then, without a word Rio leaned forward, her movements slow and deliberate, and kissed Agatha back. This time, the kiss was firm filled with purpose. To Rio, it was like the first time strange yet grounding, unfamiliar yet perfect.

When she pulled away, her brown eyes searched Agatha's. "It's okay" Rio murmured, her voice steady. "You just... caught me off guard. But..." She hesitated, a small smile playing at her lips. "Oddly enough, I think I liked it. It felt... right."

Agatha blinked, her heart racing, her lips parting to speak, but no words came. She could only stare at Rio, her chest tight with relief and something more profound.

Rio reached for her hand, her fingers brushing against Agatha's palm. "I still don't understand any of this" she admitted, her tone softer than usual. "But I know I feel... something for you. I don't know what it means yet, but it's there."

Agatha squeezed her hand gently, her voice barely above a whisper. "That's enough for me."

The two sat in silence for a few moments, the morning light wrapping around them like a blanket. Finally, Rio shifted, her usual practicality taking over. "We should get moving" she said, her voice regaining some of its usual sharpness. "We have the piece. It's time to head back to Westview."

Agatha nodded, brushing off her skirt as she stood. "Let's get packed."

When they emerged from the tent, Nessa was already up, poking at the remnants of the fire from the night before. She looked up as they approached, her face lighting up. "Finally! I was starting to think you two were going to sleep the day away."

Rio rolled her eyes but didn't comment, while Agatha offered a small smile. "Good morning, Nessa. Did you sleep well?"

"Better than you two, apparently," Nessa teased, standing and brushing the soot from her hands. "But now that you're up, what's the plan?"

Rio glanced at the horizon, the distant line of trees glowing faintly in the morning sun. "We head back to Westview. We've got what we came for."

"And then?" Nessa pressed, her expression turning serious.

Agatha's gaze softened as she looked at the younger girl. "And then we'll make you safe" she promised. "No matter what it takes."

Rio nodded, her posture firm, but a flicker of doubt crossed her face. Agatha noticed it, stepping closer to her. "We'll figure it out" she said quietly, her voice steady.

For a moment, Rio's eyes met Agatha's, and that unspoken connection passed between them again. It wasn't clarity, not yet but it was something solid to hold on to.

"Let's go" Rio said finally, her voice firm as she shouldered her pack. "We've got a long journey ahead."

As they began packing up the camp, Agatha couldn't help but glance at Rio, her heart aching with equal parts hope and fear. She knew the road ahead wouldn't be easy, but for now, she held on to the memory of Rio's kiss and the fragile promise it carried.
