Chapter Thirty-Nine: Reconnection
Agatha climbed the creaking staircase slowly, her hand gliding along the smooth, worn banister. The faint glow of moonlight streamed through the hallway window, casting soft silver streaks across the wooden floorboards. Each step felt heavier than the last.
Reaching her bedroom door, she hesitated for a moment, her hand resting on the brass handle. Taking a deep breath, she pushed the door open and stepped inside. The room was dimly lit, the faint flicker of moonlight filtering through the sheer curtains. It danced across the simple furnishings a neatly made bed, a small desk cluttered with books, and a single armchair by the window.
Agatha moved to the bed, her fingers brushing against the cool, soft fabric of the quilt. She sat down on the edge, slipping off her boots and setting them neatly beside the bed. With a small sigh, she swung her legs onto the mattress and settled back against the pillows.
Rio stayed behind in the armchair, her gaze fixed on the crackling fire that had slowly begun to dwindle. She rubbed her palms together absently, the faint warmth of the room doing little to calm the swirling thoughts in her head. She wasn't sure why she hadn't followed Agatha immediately it felt like something she wasn't ready to admit to herself.
She let out a slow breath, leaning forward to rest her elbows on her knees. The silence in the room stretched, broken only by the faint creak of wood as the house seemed to settle into its quiet night. Rio's eyes flicked toward the staircase, lingering on the direction Agatha had gone. The memory of their earlier kiss still clung to her like a shadow, an imprint she couldn't shake.
After a moment, she pushed herself to her feet, her movements deliberate but hesitant. Her boots thudded softly against the floor as she made her way to the base of the stairs. She paused, hand on the railing, glancing back toward the empty living room. For a fleeting second, she considered staying behind, but something pulled her forward.
The climb was slow, each step creaking beneath her weight as she ascended. The hallway stretched out in front of her, dim and quiet, the faint glow of moonlight spilling through the window. She approached Agatha's room, the door slightly ajar, revealing a sliver of the soft glow from inside.
Rio lingered in the doorway, her shadow stretching across the threshold. Her eyes landed on Agatha, curled under the quilt, her hair spilling over the pillow in messy waves. She looked so beautiful.
Something in Rio's chest twisted, an ache she didn't fully understand. She rapped her knuckles lightly against the doorframe, the sound barely audible. "Mind some company?" she murmured, her voice low but steady.
Agatha stirred at the soft knock, her eyes fluttering towards the door. The sight of Rio standing hesitantly in the doorway pulled her fully from her train of thought. A small smile tugged at her lips, warm and inviting.
"Come in, Join me" Agatha said gently, shifting under the quilt to make room. Her voice carried no hesitation, only a quiet understanding that Rio needed this as much as she did.
Rio stepped into the room, her movements uncharacteristically tentative. The room smelled faintly of lavender and something uniquely Agatha. She reached the edge of the bed and hesitated, her eyes darting from Agatha's face to the empty space beside her.
