The aroma of the pie I was baking filled the air, mingling with the smoke that escaped as I opened the oven. I carefully pulled out the pie, ready to serve it to the Steels since I had insisted on preparing breakfast today. As I carried it to the dining room, the warm scent of vanilla followed me, lingering throughout the room until I served the pie to my family.

Taking the seat beside Scarlette, I quietly poured cereal and milk into her bowl as the family began enjoying the pie I had made just for them. They chatted casually, while I sat silently, my eyes fixed on them, following each movement of their mouths as they chewed and swallowed the pie I had prepared.

"Why aren't you eating?" Mason's voice snapped me out of my thoughts, but I didn't respond immediately. Instead, my gaze shifted to the small dark shadow not far from him—Judah, the black cat, attending to his business in the litter box.

"It's my pleasure to watch you enjoy my cooking, especially since that recipe was given to me by my mother," I answered, saying the truth—I could still remember how my mother had spiked my father's food with our dog's shit when he cheated on her.

"It's good, hon," my husband commented.

I turned to him with a soft smile. "I'm glad you like it," I said before glancing at the two people sitting across from us. "What about you, Enzo, Catherine? Are you enjoying it?"

Swallowing, Catherine nodded her head. "It's so good, Mary!"

My smile widened, reaching my cheeks, then I stood up. "If you'll excuse me, I'll head to the bedroom now to rest."

They merely nodded at me without even lifting their gazes, so I turned and headed upstairs to my room, where I settled onto the bed with my laptop resting on my lap. Flipping it open, I typed softly with my delicate fingers, each keystroke echoing through the room like the gentle chirping of crickets at night. Scrolling through the pictures, I realized that my father was right—I would definitely need them.

"What are you doing?" a voice suddenly thundered, but I didn't flinch as I'd already sensed his presence and heard his footsteps when he took the stairs. Though I kept typing on my laptop, ignoring Mason's attempt to get my attention. "I didn't like how you were so focused on the cat earlier when I spoke to you, and now you're completely brushing me off again," he said.

At last, I stopped typing and slowly turned to face him, noticing his hands and shirt drenched in water, which made me raise an eyebrow.

"Oh," he shrugged, catching my stare at his wet clothes. "I drowned Judah in the lake. I told you, Mary, I don't like anyone stealing my spotlight."

I licked my lips, then pressed them together as I clicked the send button on my laptop, knowing it would drive the person I was sending it to absolute madness once he received it.

"Don't ignore me, Mary, or I would drown that laptop in the lake next," Mason growled.

Finally, I stood up from the bed, closed the device, and slowly made my way toward the man, cupping his face once I was close enough. I tilted my head slightly to draw our faces closer, so close that I could feel his breath on my lips.

Our eyes locked and I felt him stiffened, swallowing to regain control of himself.

"You know, Mason?" I asked, a smile tugging at my lips before it quickly vanished, replaced by a venom so deadly that if it were real, this man would be dead. "I'm tired of your shit."
