My body flew through the window, tumbling into the tree below. The branches snagged and softened my descent before I hit the ground hard, sending a cloud of dust exploding into the air. The branches scraped at my skin as I fell, sharp stings tracing lines of pain across my body, and I think I've broken some bones. Groaning, I lay motionless on the ground, struggling to catch my breath. I slowly opened my eyes, only to find a pair of dark and piercing ones staring down at me from the window two stories above.
His face twisted into a sneer, an utter expression of disappointment that I was still breathing. Without a word, he stepped back from the window, no doubt heading down to finish me. I gritted my teeth and forced my aching body to rise, every movement sending waves of pain through me, but I risk afford to stay down.
I bit down hard on my lip to stifle a cry as sharp pain shot through my legs and waist. I definitely had broken bones, but I needed to move fast—otherwise, he'd catch up and give me more than just cracked bones.
I dragged myself to walk, each step heavy and rapidly draining my strength. But then I stopped when my gaze wandered into the darkness ahead of me. I saw nothing but shadows and towering trees that blocked the moonlight—no street lamps, no neighboring houses. This place was completely secluded, which meant I wouldn't have anyone to help me.
I was all by myself...
If I continued forward, I'd be lost, and wild animals would only add to my problems. But if I went back inside the church, I'd have the advantage because it was the one place I knew better than anywhere else in the world.
I stared into the darkness, letting my mind race as I tried to make a decision, until a rustle behind me snapped me back to reality. Roman was getting closer, so with careful steps, I moved toward a tree and hid into its shadow.
Just like me, he was trying to remain silent as he searched for me. But his presence was overwhelming, thickening the air and making each breath feel suffocating. His footsteps were as quiet as a cat's, but my hearing was sharp like a bat's. I could hear each of his movements, causing my heart pace faster and faster every time the noise drew closer.
I counted numbers in my head, measuring the time I had left before he spotted me. But then he stopped, probably holding his breath too while surveying the area before sprinting in the opposite direction when a heavy object crashed inside the church.
Breathing out a sigh of faint relief, my shoulders relaxed. I took a moment to calm my nerves before forcing myself to move toward my car, just a few steps away. I knew there was something inside that could help me, and I was right when I spotted a small dagger in the compartment between the driver's and passenger seats.
I reached out and flipped the blade open, staring at the reflection of my blood-soaked face on its shiny surface. My hair was matted and tangled with dried blood, parts of my skin were broken, and bruises were already forming across my face. I looked like I'd been through hell, but the truth was, I hadn't even reached it yet. All of this was just the journey because the real hell would come when I stepped back into that church to finish what I've started. But I should not be reckless because when I accidentally was, it cost Scarlette's life. I took her here with me and locked her inside one of the rooms in the church. I didn't know how she got out, but she managed, and now she's dead.
I closed my eyes and clenched my fists as I drew in a deep breath. I thought killing Roman would be as easy as taking out the rest of his fucked up family, but I was wrong. He has a tight grip on survival, with Satan himself guiding him.
Pocketing the dagger, I cautiously made my way to the back of the church. Once there, I bit my lip and tapped my foot softly against the ground, my anxiety growing as I tried to think of a plan. I began pacing back and forth, my heart pounding in my chest, until I felt a droplet prickling on my skin.
