Chapter 8
Bradford
We learned plenty in an hour. Holly's Dad was a maintenance worker for Blake's old team. He worked there from the time Blake started to the time Easton came along. He loved football and was a loved employee of the team.
When he had a heart attack and died, Holly was left with nothing. By then the Bradford's had left the team, and the good vibes had left with them. It was no longer a family environment but more of everyone out for themselves. No one was looking out for the employees who had dedicated their lives to the team.
Because of that, Holly was left alone with nothing but a stack of bills and no way to pay them.
She quit school when she couldn't afford it anymore and went to work to pay off what her dad left behind. That's when she got into trouble. The smooth talking schemer came into the office she was working at and she got taken for a ride. It wasn't long before she found herself pregnant, alone and still struggling with a stack of bills she couldn't pay.
"When he realized she had nothing to offer him financially, and she was pregnant to boot, the coward ran? That's what you're saying?" Easton asked as angry about the news we got as I am.
"Exactly. I think he expected her to have some sort of inheritance from the team. Given how long he worked there, you would have thought he had some kind of retirement plan but obviously he didn't. I don't think they offered any employee outside of the players and coaches something like that." Callahan explained.
"That's horrible. Anyone who dedicates their life to an organization should have a retirement fund waiting for them. We have to be sure we have that in place for our staff, all of them." Lowe insisted on that.
"Holly found you then, right?" I asked Easton.
"Yeah, but I didn't know about all this. I knew she was broke and Tempy's father had bailed on her. That's all. If I had known she needed help..." There was guilt on his face as he rubbed at the stress he was feeling. He feels responsible for letting things get this far.
"She didn't tell you. That's not your fault. And she wouldn't have told you if she didn't have to. That's not who she is," Dad's right about that. Holly's independent and wants to carry her weight.
"I can help with some of this," Lowe said, taking Easton's hand. "We can make some investments in Tempest's name for her education. We can secure her future for Holly. It won't bail Holly out, but give her peace of mind for her daughter, and do it in a way this piece of shit can't touch the money."
"That's a good idea, Lowe. One Bradford Drake can match as a scholarship for her. Again Zane can't touch that." Cade offered.
We made plans to help out within our limits so Zane couldn't get to the money and Holly wouldn't get pissed off. A retirement fund for her, a scholarship fund for Tempest, and armed with the list of creditors that she owes. I plan on helping her knock those out too.
It took longer than I expected and I had other plans to make for the day, so I used my old office for a couple hours and made my calls. As I wrapped up the last one before I left, Dad came in and sat across from me and waited for me to finish up my call.
"Yes, I want it delivered to The Drake, she's on dock thirty two at the marina. Seven o'clock. Perfect. Yes, if you could set it up on deck. Thank you." My dad raised his eyebrows at me and smiled knowing what I was doing.
"A night of romance on the boat, huh? Does Holly know what you have planned?" He asked, taking the hacky sack from the corner of my desk and tossing it from one hand to the other. "She doesn't get seasick does she?"
