Chapter 16
Holly
How do I feel about Bradford? Everything has happened so fast I haven't really thought about it. He was such a jerk in the beginning and was rude but he changed. He... became more than a boss to me. He was a friend.
"Do you love him?" Emma pressed me for an answer.
"I don't know. I care about him. We were going to get married," I reasoned.
"And you just called it off." Emma took my hand and lifted it, pointing out the empty ring finger where Bradford's ring once sat.
She raised her eyebrows at me as if to say that she knows that I didn't take it off for the right reason. Maybe she's right. I don't know.
"He was trying to protect us. I don't know if he really wanted that. I think he was just going along with it because you pushed it. You didn't exactly give us a choice," I don't bite my tongue this time. I don't think Emma would appreciate it. She hits me as a woman who appreciates honesty.
"You're right. I didn't. Because I saw what was happening between the two of you and if I leave it to Bradford it will take him years to figure it out. By then the opportunity would be gone." She smiled at me with a wink. "Men need a nudge occasionally to do the right thing."
Is that what this was? A nudge to do the right thing?
"Shouldn't that have been our choice? If I wanted a fast romance don't you think I could have done something about it? Or Bradford could have? We didn't need any help!" I don't appreciate the push. I'm capable of making my own decisions.
"You're right. You can and you could have done that but would you have? Your focus is Tempy, and I'm not saying you are wrong there. Bradford is focused on football. Again not saying he's wrong either but you have an opportunity for something great together, something you will only find once in a lifetime. Don't you want to hold on to that?"
The question again has me thinking. So much has changed. So much is different from the life I knew. I'm not sure of anything right now. I need to get Tempy back. That's all I can think about right now.
"Emma, I have to focus on Tempy. I have to get her back," I explained.
The doors flew open behind us, and Sawyer burst out into the sunlight. He looked around the parking lot like he was searching for someone. Then his eyes landed on us and he smiled rushing right to us.
"Good, you're still here," Sawyer smiled. "Holly, you can't go anywhere. We have a plan and I need your help."
Bradford
Twenty minutes earlier
I should have left her alone. I never should have gotten involved with Holly. Her daughter would have been safer outside of this family. If Holly had stayed working for Easton, if she had not been brought to the house, if she had just...
"Stop it!" Mom ordered, snapping at me like she did when I was a kid getting to something I wasn't supposed to be doing. "You know Emma and Blake aren't going to let her just walk out of here."
"Maybe they should," I pouted, pissed that I'm stuck in this bed and can't do anything to help her.
"Is that really what you want?" Mom doesn't give me a chance to answer and continues, "I've seen the way you look at her. I saw it before you asked her to marry you. I've never seen you look at any woman that way."
My brows draw down, as my jaw clenches tight. Curling my fists around the edge of the blanket I think about her words. I've never looked at any woman the way I look at her. That's because I never cared about a woman this way. I never had any feelings for a woman like this before.
