Chapter 21
Bradford
Breakfast at the family table had always been loud, but this morning the noise was edged with something sharp, anger, worry, desperation.
Holly moved around the kitchen in soft gray leggings and an oversized sweatshirt, her hair piled on top of her head, trying to pretend the tension wasn't pressing into her shoulders. She set plates in front of each of us.
Aiden, Easton, Wyatt, and Sawyer, had come over early this morning to devise a plan. My family wasn't going to let Zane get away with what he's done. We sat huddled together at the breakfast table, hot eggs and bacon steaming on platters between us, like generals planning a war.
Because in a way, we were.
"We could hire a PI to tail him," Aiden suggested, his fork tapping restlessly against the table.
"Tried that. He knows he's being watched." I rubbed a hand over my jaw. "He'll just go underground again."
"Then we make him think we're backing off," Sawyer said, voice low. "Give him room to get comfortable."
Easton shook his head. "That's how people end up dead."
The news of the caseworker's death is still fresh in all of our minds.
Holly set down a fresh platter of French toast, her stomach turning. Zane had stolen her peace, her safety, and she'd be damned if he took more. But every time she opened her mouth to say something, her throat closed up.
The back door creaked open, and Georgia breezed in, smelling of cold air and expensive perfume. She kissed Wyatt's cheek before snatching a strip of bacon.
"Morning Daddy," Georgia cooed to Wyatt.
"Morning baby. You're here early," Wyatt replied, concerned about his daughter's motives. She doesn't get up until noon on weekends.
"I'm on a mission. What's all this?" she asked, glancing at the huddle.
"Family business," Easton muttered. "It's nothing for you to worry your pretty head about, G."
Georgia arched a brow. "I see."
She leaned against the counter, watching them over the rim of her coffee. The men kept their heads together, voices dropping even lower.
"What about wearing a wire?" Sawyer asked under his breath. "We could be listening to his conversations with Holl..."
"No," Bradford said immediately. "I'm not putting her in that position."
"We could have Holly reach out..." Aiden started.
"Absolutely not." Bradford's voice was sharp enough to cut. "Holly and Tempy aren't getting involved again."
Easton sighed. "We could try to pay him off. Make him disappear."
"That doesn't solve the problem," Wyatt said. "You know he'll just keep coming back. It just delays it."
Georgia listened, thoughtful, as she picked at the bacon in her hand. Then she propped one hip against the counter, her expression sharpening as an idea took shape.
"Why not set him up?" she said finally, her tone almost casual. "Set a trap and let the police take care of him."
"Georgia." Easton's voice was sharp. "Stay out of this. We don't want him hurting anyone else."
"I'm part of this family too," she shot back.
Her gaze flicked to Holly and softened just enough to show she wasn't entirely reckless.
