Hearing Liu Qin refer to him as "Crown Prince" immediately put Pei Yao and Fang Yun on high alert.

But Pei Yao, seasoned by experience, maintained his composure.

He silently assessed Liu Qin before speaking sternly, "Why do you call me that?"

Though the question was simple, it carried a powerful presence. Even injured and in a humble hut, Pei Yao's authoritative aura remained undiminished.

Liu Qin, though young, steadied himself after a brief moment of nervousness and knelt respectfully.

"This humble one may be unremarkable, but I studied under a private tutor for several years. When you were rescued, your robe bore the four-clawed dragon pattern, which is exclusively for the Crown Prince. This led me to deduce your identity. Additionally, while buying medicine, I heard from soldiers that the Emperor's autumn hunt was interrupted by an incident at the Xiang River Bridge, where the Crown Prince and a concubine fell and went missing. Therefore, I am confident of your identity."

After this explanation, Pei Yao slightly raised his chin.

"Since you guessed our identity, why didn't you inform the soldiers?"

"For your safety," Liu Qin replied promptly. "When my father rescued you both, you were injured, indicating danger. Having read about the court, I understand the current political climate and dared not act rashly."

Pei Yao began to appreciate the young man before him.

"You've done well. You have a great debt of gratitude from me."

Liu Qin bowed deeply. "I'm unworthy. Though I haven't earned a title yet, as a subject of this kingdom, loyalty to the rightful ruler is paramount."

"You didn't consider turning me in for rewards and titles?" Pei Yao asked nonchalantly.

Liu Qin met his gaze briefly before bowing again, his tone resolute. "Your Highness, forgive my boldness. If you were a wastrel, I would disdain you. But you are not. The current Emperor, despite his governance, assumed the throne with private motives, betraying the late Emperor's trust. King Ming's ambition for the throne is disloyal. Such men do not deserve my service."

Pei Yao's admiration grew. Speaking such truths required immense courage, especially at a young age, with clear discernment and firm principles.

Fang Yun, besides admiring Liu Qin, was relieved that Pei Yao's reputation remained untarnished by Empress Li and King Ming, preventing Liu Qin from betraying them.

"A remarkable young man with exceptional courage. You will achieve great things. Stand up," Pei Yao said, smiling.

After Liu Qin stood, Pei Yao added quietly, "Keep our identities secret from your family. The fewer who know, the safer we are."

"Of course, Your Highness," Liu Qin nodded. "How should I address you and the lady in public?"

After a brief thought, Pei Yao replied, "Call me Master Wen, after my mother's family name. Address her as my wife."

Pei Yao glanced at Fang Yun, who nodded in agreement.

Having established this, Pei Yao inquired about external affairs.

Liu Qin promptly shared the information he had gathered.

Currently, there are two groups of searchers outside—royal guards and the capital guards—scouring the forest along both sides of the river and nearby villages. Some are also dredging the river.

The Liu family lives in seclusion, relying on woodcutting, and their remote location hasn't been searched yet. Liu Qin's observation that some soldiers seemed suspicious was no lie; it's likely King Ming's men are mixed among the search parties, posing as soldiers or civilians, secretly hunting for Pei Yao and Fang Yun.

Hence, Liu Qin didn't dare buy medicine, fearing King Ming's men might be monitoring pharmacies, especially for injury and prenatal care supplies.

"Currently, the Emperor has returned to the palace. Chancellor Lu and Commander Hu Daixu are directing the search, but there are covert agents involved. I can only relay a message directly to Chancellor Lu or Commander Hu, but with spies watching, it's difficult," Liu Qin said worriedly.

Pei Yao knew King Ming would not give up easily. He'd sent assassins before and would likely try again.

"Your Highness, I have an idea," Fang Yun said softly.

Pei Yao and Liu Qin turned to her.

"King Ming is focused on you, but he might not be watching King Dun closely. Though King Dun was promoted alongside King Ming, outsiders viewed it as balancing power. Since then, King Dun has stayed low profile, rarely involving himself in court matters. He remains unnoticed, but I know of his private rapport with you," Fang Yun suggested.

Realizing this, Pei Yao saw the potential. Turning to Liu Qin, he asked, "Can you deliver a message to King Dun?"

"Yes! We have a horse; it won't take long," Liu Qin nodded firmly.

Pei Yao whispered instructions in Liu Qin's ear. Moments later, after notifying his parents, Liu Qin rode off.

Pei Yao, looking serious, squeezed Fang Yun's hand. He could only hope for this unknown young man's success.

"Don't worry, Your Highness," Fang Yun reassured, holding his hand gently. "I'll stay by your side, no matter what."

Now, Fang Yun was the only person Pei Yao could fully trust, sharing a bond through adversity.

Nodding, he pulled her closer. "I'll protect you and our child."

A little later, soft clinking sounds came from outside, followed by Liu Qin's mother's gentle voice.

"Sir, Madam, the food is ready. Sir is injured; let me bring it in."
