Five months had already passed since the construction of the underground began but today had not been a day like any other at the factory. President Gerald Ford and a guy named Henry Kissinger and 20 other guys came to the factory. One of the men everyone knows as one of the nation's power brokers walked through the doors of Playtime Co. He arrived with his bodyguards and companions, entering the building as if he owned the world. At his side was Ludwin, all smiles and handshakes, acting as if it were just another day. But to us, this was anything but normal. This was something that had not happened since President Nixon had come here.
From what I could hear, they were discussing the underground project, the so-called "Playtime Express." Kissinger spoke in his measured tone, full of strategic intent, praising the progress Ludwin had made. He mentioned how essential these secret facilities were to the "security of the factory", even hinting at their potential use for "plans to create living beings against Soviet threats." I don't know if that meant propaganda, experiments, or something worse. Xavier, Matthew, Matteo, and I kept a low profile. We watched from the shadows, piecing together bits of their conversation.
Xavier whispered to me, "Elliot, this is bigger than we imagined." He was right. It wasn't just about toys or even the train: we were caught in the web of something huge, something sinister. As Kissinger, Gerald, and Ludwin moved into the conference room, I couldn't contain myself any longer. I decided to confront Gerald. Why were they there? Why were so many important people in a toy factory? Why has the President of the United States come to the factory twice? My friends tried to stop me, but the frustration had grown too much. I walked into the room and stared at the man.
- Hello gentlemen-, I began, trying to keep my voice steady, -don't you find it strange that a toy factory needs your level of expertise? What are you really doing here? -For a moment, his expression didn't change, but then he smiled, as if he'd been waiting for me. -Young man-, he said, his voice calm but intimidating, -My friend the world is not as simple as it seems. What happens here today shapes the reality of tomorrow. Some things are best left unquestioned.-The weight of his words struck me, but I wasn't satisfied. I glanced at Ludwin, who seemed uneasy that I was there, but he didn't say anything. I left the room with more questions than answers, but one thing was clear: we were in trouble.
As we regrouped, Matteo asked, "Do you think they're building anything other than a train down there?" I didn't answer. We all knew the answer in our hearts. and you know everything is strange when his office calls you so I just went and...
And from that came the only conversation I can remember in my entire life.
**Elliot**: Ludwin, I've been thinking... why all the secrecy about the underground project? I mean, why can't we be honest about what we're doing? I feel like there's a lot of things they're not telling me.
**Ludwin** *(leaning back calmly in his chair)*: Elliot, secrecy isn't just about hiding something sinister, it's about protection. The world
which is not kind to innovation, especially that which challenges the norms. The living and the dead, the real and the fictional. Do you think people would understand if we told them that this project is about creating something that will outlast us?
**Elliot**: Outlast us? But how does a train fit into that? And why involve people like the president or a tycoon like Kissinger? This seems bigger than just toys or transportation.
**Ludwin** *(smiling slightly)*: You're observant, I admire that. The train is just one piece of the puzzle, Elliot. A foundation. What will be underneath, what will thrive underground, will drive progress for generations. And as for them, well, let's just say progress needs powerful allies.
**Elliot** *(hesitantly)*: But progress at what price? I've understood things, Ludwin, about experiments, about Watergate. How do I know this isn't just another way to control people?
**Ludwin** *(sighing, then leaning forward)*: Life, Elliot, is a loaded word. What I seek is the order of life. Chaos only leads to ruin, and if we don't shift humanity toward the right life, who will? I need people like you, brilliant, passionate, to ensure this vision is carefully realized.
**Elliot** *(still unsure)*: You say it like it's noble, but there's something about it that doesn't sit right with me. Why hide it from others? Something this good has to be taught, right?
**Ludwin** *(laughing lightly)*: Not everyone has your questioning ability, Elliot. Too much information can overwhelm the wrong minds. Or have you never seen the communist bloc? Let me worry about the bigger picture. You just focus on doing what you do best: helping build this future. And who knows that there might be a reward for you
**Elliot** *(after a pause)*: What if I don't agree with this future? Rewards don't matter if I agree
**Ludwin** *(calmly, but with a hint of authority)*: Then I remind you that you signed up for this. Just trust, Elliot. That's what it's all about. And in time, I'm sure you'll see the brilliance of what we're creating here. I just want you to promise me that you'll take care of it with everything, I have faith in you
After that I walked out of his office and that's when I knew my life was already sold...
From there it was already night so there was the Liet He decided to take me home in his car, on the way he told me that what Elliot does is real, Mysterious but you really have to have confidence. I don't know if I believe him at this point, but as soon as I said goodbye to him I went into my house.
