Serafina's mother had invited her home to check on her relationship. She knew her husband was invited to meet her partner and was upset that she couldn't go. But she also knew it was because of Rosalie's husband, so she wasn't too upset—with her daughter anyway. But the audacity of this husband existing had her fuming.
But Serafina didn't take her mother's advice on having him disappear as soon as possible. Although it killed her, she still respected Rosalie's decision to keep him around. She didn't want to force her into anything she wasn't comfortable with. She allowed herself to be the other woman.
The affair had been going strong for several months. On this day, Serafina stood in her kitchen preparing her latest treat, which she would be splitting with Rosalie. She listened for the telltale signs that the husband had left before she calmly made her way to her neighbor's apartment.
She knocked on the door before trying it but was surprised to find it locked. It was never locked at this time. The two women saw each other nearly every day, and if they couldn't, they would let the other know in advance. Rosalie had never said anything about missing. She gave it a few more knocks but was met with silence. She thought she might have forgotten about some appointment Rosalie mentioned and gave up, turning to return to her apartment when she suddenly heard William's cries.
She quickly placed the slice of cake on the small table in the hallway between the two apartments before returning to the door. She pounded the door frantically to try and get an answer. "Rosa! Are you okay?" she shouted.
Rosalie had known Serafina would come by; she hoped to trick her into thinking she had left but had forgotten how attached her son was to her lover. He heard her knock and waited for her to come in. When she didn't, he became fussy. She tried to stop it in time but wasn't quick enough. She carried him to the door but still stopped. She could hear the fear and concern in Serafina's voice, "I'm alright," she called out while never opening the door, "You can go home now."
"Mi amor, what's wrong?" Serafina asked. She had calmed considerably after hearing Rosalie's voice. But her concern wouldn't dissipate completely until she saw her beloved.
"Nothing, but please go," Rosalie answered.
"No," Serafina answered. Rosalie could hear the defiance in that one word.
"I don't want you here today; please just go," she answered shakily. She scolded herself in her mind. She was so weak. She couldn't even talk. How pathetic. She wasn't believable at all. She steeled her tone as she tried again, "Go."
"No," Serafina answered again, "Open the door right now. Or I'll call my club's security to come break it down. Emmett would love to do it, I'm sure."
"If you love me, please go," Rosalie answered.
"It's because I love you that I won't. What's going on? Please open the door. You're scaring me," Serafina pleaded.
The lock suddenly clicked. Serafina knew the door was now unlocked for her, but she still felt she needed to warn Rosalie. "I'm coming in," she said before slowly opening the door.
