--

The rooftop was cold under my feet, the wind biting as it whipped through the broken skyline of Zaun. All I felt was the crushing weight pressing against my chest, smothering me until I could barely breathe.

It wasn't dramatic, not like the stories people tell about their darkest moments. It was quiet. Numb. Like slipping into a deep, dark hole. I stepped closer to the edge, my eyes drifting to the streets below.

Just one step, I thought. Just one.

"Y/N! What the hell are you doing?"

The voice startled me, sharp and filled with panic. Before I could process anything, strong hands yanked me backward, and I stumbled, nearly falling onto the rooftop.

I turned and saw her, Jinx. She looked wild, her pink eyes glowing unnaturally in the low light, wide with something that could've been anger or fear.

"You're crazy!" she snapped, gripping my shoulders tightly. Her fingers dug in just enough to hurt, grounding me in the moment. "What the hell were you thinking?"

I couldn't answer. My throat felt dry, and the words wouldn't come. Her gaze darted over me, frantic, like she was trying to piece together what had led to this.

Then it happened. Her eyes widened further, flickering as if she was seeing something I couldn't. Her grip faltered, and her head jerked slightly to the side.

"See? You couldn't even protect her! Just like them," a faint voice hissed in her head, though it wasn't mine.

"No!" she barked suddenly, releasing me and stepping back, her hands clutching her head.

"Shut up! Just shut up!" Her tone wavered between fury and desperation, her fingers curling tightly into her blue hair as she tugged at it, almost as if she wanted to rip the voices out of her skull.

She spun in place, pacing erratically, her words now directed at thin air. "She's fine. I got here in time. I saved her, okay? You don't get to.. don't get to mess this up for me! I saved her!"

Another phantom voice slithered in, this one softer, crueler. "But you didn't notice, did you? You were too busy. Too selfish. And now look at her."

Jinx froze, her shoulders trembling as her hand moved to her mouth, pressing against her lips like she could stop herself from crying. Then she turned sharply and screamed into the void, "I said shut up!"

I flinched at the raw intensity in her voice, the way it cracked under the weight of her anguish. Her wide, glowing eyes snapped back to me, almost as if she'd just remembered I was there.

"You're lying," she hissed, her gaze darting back to the nothingness around her. "You're wrong. I.. I can fix this. I will fix this!" Her chest heaved as she stared into the empty space, fists clenched at her sides, before finally spinning back to me.

The hallucination seemed to fade as she knelt down in front of me, her trembling hands gripping my shoulders again. Her pink eyes, though still wide, were locked on mine, desperate and raw.
