"So you really think that footage says it all?" the opposing lawyer challenged, a sly smirk plastered on his face.
Haeun raised an eyebrow, intrigued by the question. She loved it when they underestimated her-it only made her victories sweeter. Rising from her seat, she straightened her skirt, took a steady breath, and looked directly at the lawyer, then the judge.
"Well, I never said the footage held all the answers. No, seriously, you've misunderstood me," she replied smoothly, her voice steady yet cutting.
She gestured toward the screen where the footage was paused. "As you can see, he put a piece of paper in the locker, correct?" The judge nodded, gesturing for her to continue. "We searched thoroughly and found that paper. It wasn't at the crime scene but at his friend's house. This proves premeditation. The victim wasn't targeted by chance; it was planned."
Haeun turned her sharp gaze to the opposing lawyer, whose frown deepened as she laid out her evidence. "That paper contained detailed instructions, indicating they had agreed on the harassment in advance. On the day of the attack, the accused had a free schedule and went to her apartment with malicious intent. When she resisted, they fought. That's why the perpetrator has visible scratches on his face."
She set the evidence down and clasped her hands behind her back, her presence commanding the courtroom.
The judge reviewed the papers carefully and nodded in understanding. But then, Juno-the man on trial-suddenly erupted. "That's bullshit! There were three of us!" he blurted out, earning a glare from his own lawyer, who was visibly frustrated.
Haeun allowed herself a small, satisfied scoff as she returned to her seat. "I never said there were only two of you," she quipped, her tone laced with confidence. She leaned back, folding her hands in her lap, proud of yet another case won.
After the hearing concluded, the victim's tearful mother approached her, gratitude spilling from every word. "Thank you so much. She didn't deserve this. My daughter is still so young."
Haeun offered the woman a comforting smile and gently held her hands. "It's my job, ma'am. But more than that, I believe in justice. She deserves to live her life without fear."
As the woman walked away, Haeun finally allowed herself to exhale. It had been her third trial of the day, and exhaustion was beginning to take its toll.
"Great job, sunbae," her junior colleague, Hooyoung, said, catching up to her as she made her way back to her office. "How do you never lose a case?"
