The light in the room was dim, soft and warm, casting long shadows across the walls. The steady beep of the heart monitor had become a rhythmic sound, almost like a lullaby, though it still echoed too loudly in the silence that enveloped the room. Shubman was sitting next to Kaira’s bed, his hand still clasped around hers. His eyes were heavy with exhaustion, but he hadn’t moved for hours. Every so often, he would squeeze her hand, as if trying to pull her back from the edge of the darkness that had taken her away.
The last few days had felt like an eternity. He hadn’t left her side, even when the doctors had told him there was little they could do except wait. The waiting had been the hardest part—waiting for a sign, any sign, that Kaira was still there, still fighting.
And then, just as the sun began to dip below the horizon, casting a soft orange glow into the room, Kaira’s hand shifted. It was almost imperceptible, just a slight twitch of her fingers, but to Shubman, it felt like the world had shifted.
His eyes snapped open, focusing immediately on her face. Her eyelids fluttered, the delicate movement making his heart race. For a moment, he thought he was imagining it. But then her fingers moved again, more deliberately this time. He leaned forward, his breath catching in his throat.
“Kaira?” he whispered, his voice barely audible as if speaking too loudly might break the fragile moment. He watched, his heart pounding in his chest, as her eyes slowly flickered open. At first, they were unfocused, the pupils dilated, but slowly they began to settle, and her gaze met his.
For a second, she just stared at him, as though trying to process what was happening. Then, her lips parted, and she whispered, her voice rough, barely above a breath. “Shubman?”
Tears sprang to his eyes at the sound of her voice—weak, but unmistakably her voice. A sob caught in his throat, but he quickly swallowed it down. He was overwhelmed, but he didn’t want to frighten her, not now, not when she had just come back to him.
“I’m here,” he said, his voice thick with emotion. “I’m right here, Kaira. You’re going to be okay.”
Kaira’s brow furrowed slightly, her mind still foggy, trying to make sense of the reality she had just woken up to. She took a slow, shallow breath and looked around the room, as if trying to gather her bearings. The sterile white walls, the faint scent of antiseptic in the air—it was all so unfamiliar, but the sight of Shubman’s face beside her brought a strange sense of calm.
“W-what happened?” Her voice was soft, fragile, and it shook slightly as she spoke.
“You... you were in an accident,” Shubman replied, his voice barely a whisper. “A truck hit your car. You were hurt really badly, Kaira. You’ve been unconscious for a few days.”
Her eyes widened in confusion and concern. “The truck... I—how? I don’t remember...”
“I know. I know,” Shubman said, his grip tightening around her hand. “It’s okay. You don’t need to remember it right now. You’re safe now. You’re here with me. You’re going to be okay. Just take it easy. Don’t try to think too much.”
Kaira closed her eyes for a moment, her mind racing, trying to grasp the pieces of what he was telling her. But the exhaustion was overwhelming, and her body ached in ways she couldn’t understand. She wanted to speak, to ask more questions, but it was too much.
She opened her eyes again and met Shubman’s gaze. The intensity in his eyes—the raw emotion—struck her like a bolt of lightning. He looked so different now. There was something vulnerable in the way he held her hand, something unspoken that made her heart ache.
“I—I’m sorry,” she whispered, though she wasn’t entirely sure why. “I didn’t mean to scare you.”
Shubman’s eyes softened, and he shook his head. “You don’t need to apologize for anything. You don’t have to apologize for anything, Kaira. I’ve been terrified, but you’re here now. That’s all that matters.”
