It had been a few days since Kaira's return from the exhilarating match at the stadium, but her mind still buzzed with memories of Shubman. She'd returned home filled with stories, careful to recount her experience to her parents without mentioning how close she'd been to Shubman—just that it had been a thrilling match. Yet the most thrilling part for her wasn't the game itself; it was the moments she had shared with him afterward, the way he looked at her, the gentle warmth of his presence.
Over the next few days, they kept in touch on Instagram, chatting in short bursts whenever his schedule allowed. But Kaira felt there was something she needed to know—something that had lingered in her mind since their first encounter, growing with each conversation, each smile exchanged over messages.
Late one evening, as the city lights sparkled beyond her window and the quiet of the night settled in, she sat on her bed, phone in hand, fingers nervously hovering over the screen. She opened their chat, feeling her heart race as she debated the question that had been eating at her. Taking a deep breath, she finally typed:
"Hey, Shubman. Can I ask you something?"
A few seconds passed, and then his reply came through, "Of course! What's up?"
She hesitated, a dozen different ways to phrase her question crossing her mind. She settled on something that felt both honest and casual.
"It's... well, it might sound silly. But I was just curious—do you have a girlfriend?"
There was a long pause, and Kaira could feel her heart beating faster with every second. She couldn't tell if it was nerves or anticipation or a mix of both, but every moment that ticked by seemed to amplify the uncertainty she felt.
Finally, three little dots appeared, indicating that he was typing.
"Hmm... interesting question ;)"
She bit her lip, already regretting her decision. Why had she even asked? She could imagine his teasing grin on the other side of the screen, and her face flushed with embarrassment. But before she could backtrack, his message continued:
"No, I don't have a girlfriend. Why do you ask?"
Kaira's cheeks grew warmer, and she fumbled with her phone, unsure how to respond. Part of her wanted to play it off casually, but another part of her was relieved, thrilled even, at his response.
"Oh, just curious," she replied, hoping her tone seemed light enough.
But Shubman wasn't letting her off that easily. His next message appeared almost immediately: "Just curious, huh? Are you sure that's all?"
She laughed, though the sound was nervous. She decided to go with honesty—it was the least she could do after asking him such a personal question.
"Okay, fine," she typed. "I guess I just wanted to know... I mean, we've been talking a lot, and you're... well, you're Shubman Gill, so I thought it was worth asking."
Next, a message lit up her screen, and Kaira's pulse quickened.
"And what about you, Kaira?" he wrote. "Is there someone special in your life?"
She blinked at the question, her fingers hovering over the keys as she processed what he'd just asked. The possibility that he might actually want to know, that he might even care, filled her with a mix of excitement and nerves. She hesitated only a moment before she typed her response.
"Nope," she replied simply, then added, "I'm as single as it gets."
A second later, his reply came through: "Glad to hear it." She could almost picture his teasing smile as he typed it.
Her heart skipped, and she couldn't help but laugh to herself. She wanted to ask him what he meant, to make him spell it out—but instead, she decided to mirror his playful tone.
"Glad to hear it?" she sent back with a smirk emoji. "Why do you say that, Mr. Gill?"
There was a pause before his response came, long enough that she wondered if she'd overstepped or teased too much. But then his answer appeared:
"Because now I know I'm not competing with anyone else's attention."
The words were simple, but they carried a weight that sent a shiver down her spine. She couldn't help but grin, feeling a warmth settle over her.
Kaira felt a rush of excitement as she watched the three little dots appear on the screen, indicating Shubman was typing. She smirked, fingers poised, knowing she was about to stir things up a bit.
"Well, actually..." she typed, her heart racing with each word. "I might have someone."
She sent it, then stifled a laugh, wondering how he'd react. There was a brief pause before his reply came, almost hesitant.
"Oh really?" he replied, with a single raised-eyebrow emoji.
She bit her lip, holding back a grin. "Yeah. He's kinda... special."
The typing dots appeared again, as though he was taking his time with this one. "Oh? Should I be worried?"
"Maybe," she typed back, letting the suspense linger for a few seconds. "He's kind of amazing. Makes me smile all the time... and let's just say he's got quite a few fans."
"Really?" Shubman replied, adding a skeptical face emoji. "I'll admit I'm a little curious. Any chance you'll give me a name?"
Kaira grinned, trying to keep the playfulness going. "Hmm, not sure," she replied, as if debating. "Maybe I should keep it a mystery. After all, he might just be a bit famous..."
This time, his reply came instantly: "Famous, huh? Well, that narrows it down..." He added a thinking face emoji, then continued, "Think he'd mind if I tried to win you over?"
Her cheeks flushed, even though she was alone in her room. He'd matched her energy perfectly, and she felt herself melting under the words on her screen.
"Depends," she typed, her fingers barely able to keep up with her racing heart. "Think you could outshine him?"
"Oh, I could try," he replied smoothly, adding a winking emoji. "I might even have a few tricks up my sleeve."
Kaira laughed, loving the idea of Shubman feeling even the slightest twinge of jealousy. "Maybe I'll have to see those tricks sometime," she teased back.
The dots appeared, then his reply: "Alright, now you've got me all intrigued. So tell me, what's this mystery guy like? What's he got that I don't?"
Kaira thought for a moment, loving this little game. "Hmm, let's see..." she wrote slowly, drawing it out. "He's tall, very charming... good with a bat."
"Sounds familiar..." Shubman replied with a smirk emoji.
"And he's... kind of ridiculously good-looking. The kind of guy who can make you feel like you're the only one in a crowded stadium."
She waited, heart pounding as she realized her words had become more truthful than playful. But Shubman didn't miss a beat.
"Then I've got my work cut out for me," he replied, followed by a single word that made her heart skip: "Challenge accepted."
