The courtyard of Squad 3's barracks buzzed with energy as I stepped inside. The moment my presence was announced, the squad snapped to attention, forming a neat line with military precision. Their postures were rigid, their gazes carefully averted. The tension was palpable, heavy enough to cut with a blade.
At the edge of the courtyard stood Gin, his sly grin firmly in place as though he'd anticipated my arrival to the second. His relaxed posture and half-lidded eyes belied the crackling energy in the air.
"Welcome, Captain Y/N," he said smoothly, his voice dripping with mischief. "As requested, I've gathered the squad. They're all eager to show you their best." He raised a hand, gesturing toward the assembly. "And, for the sparring match, I've nominated Kaito."
A man with short black hair and sharp eyes stepped forward. His movements were deliberate, exuding confidence, yet there was something off about him—an erratic pulse in his reiatsu, like a note played slightly off-key.
"It is an honor, Captain Izumi," Kaito said, bowing deeply. His voice was steady, but his expression held a strange intensity. "If it's alright, I'll take a moment to mentally prepare myself before the match."
I narrowed my eyes slightly. The request was odd, but I didn't press. "Take your time," I replied, turning to address the rest of the squad. "This sparring session isn't just for the spectacle. It's an opportunity to evaluate not just skill but discipline. Watch closely—you might learn something."
Kaito bowed again and disappeared into the barracks, leaving the rest of the squad murmuring among themselves.
When Kaito returned, his entire demeanor had shifted. His step was more purposeful, his reiatsu sharper. He took his position across from me as the squad members formed a loose circle around us.
Drawing my blade, I faced him. "I'll fight handicapped—no shikai, no bankai," I announced, my voice carrying over the murmurs of the crowd. "Only kido and basic swordsmanship. You, however, may fight to your fullest extent."
Kaito smirked faintly, bowing again. "Thank you, Captain. I promise to give it my all."
He unsheathed his zanpakutō, and with a sharp motion, he called out, "Pierce the heavens, Ametsuchi!"
The blade transformed instantly, elongating into a jagged, serrated weapon. Its edge gleamed like broken glass, and the air around him crackled with vibrating energy. The eerie whistle of its release sent a chill down my spine, but I steadied myself, analyzing his stance.
The fight began with a burst of movement. Kaito surged forward, swinging his weapon in a wide arc. The serrated blade howled as it cut through the air. I parried the strike deftly, the force of his blow vibrating through my blade.
He didn't relent, following up with a series of rapid slashes that forced me to sidestep and block in quick succession. His strikes were calculated, relentless, each one aiming to push me off balance.
I countered with a quick flick of my wrist, chanting, "Hado #4: Byakurai!" A bolt of lightning crackled toward him, but he dodged with surprising agility, his blade gouging the earth as he closed the distance again.
"Impressive reflexes," I said, pivoting to avoid his next strike.
Without hesitation, I raised my hand. "Bakudo #9: Geki!" A red aura enveloped Kaito, freezing him in place for a brief moment.
But his reiatsu flared, and with a roar, he broke free, his blade glowing faintly. Serrated, needle-like projectiles erupted from his zanpakutō, scattering toward me in a deadly spray.
"Bakudo #39: Enkosen!" I chanted, summoning a circular shield of energy. The projectiles struck the barrier with sharp, crackling impacts before falling harmlessly to the ground.
