The hallway outside the infirmary was quiet, illuminated only by the soft glow of lanterns casting long shadows. The healer adjusted her healer's pouch, her steps quick and uncertain as she tried to leave the tension of the day behind. Her mind was still racing from Captain Izumi's pointed questions, and she couldn't shake the feeling of unease that had settled over her.
"Heading out already?"
The voice startled her. The healer froze mid-step and turned to see Captain Gin Ichimaru leaning casually against the wall. His arms were crossed, and his ever-present smile curved faintly on his face, though his sharp gaze gave it an edge.
"Captain Ichimaru," she said, her voice faltering as she clutched her pouch tightly. "I was just returning to my quarters."
He pushed off the wall, his movements fluid as he approached her. "Busy day, wasn't it? With Captain Izumi visiting, I imagine there's been a lot on your plate."
She nodded, unsure how to respond. "It has been... a long day," she said softly.
"I can imagine." His voice was calm, but there was a weight behind it that made her feel as though he was measuring her every word. "I happened to notice something earlier. Captain Y/N seemed quite interested in Kaito. Understandable, considering the situation."
She hesitated, lowering her gaze. "He's recovering," she said carefully. "It's nothing unusual."
Gin's smile remained in place, but his tone shifted ever so slightly, gaining a sharper edge. "That's an interesting assessment coming from someone like you."
"Someone like me?" she asked, her pulse quickening.
"You're the healer, aren't you?" he said, stepping closer. "The one who sees every injury, hears every concern, and tends to all the things no one else notices. If anyone knows what's been going on, it's you."
"I don't know what you mean, Captain," Himari replied, her voice unsteady.
"Oh, I think you do," he said, stopping just a pace away. His gaze pinned her in place, his smile unchanging but no longer comforting. "Himari Aoi."
The sound of her full name startled her. Her breath hitched as she stared at him, her grip on her pouch tightening.
"It's my job to know," he said simply, his voice steady and matter-of-fact. "You've been taking care of my squad. That means you've seen the changes. The things others might miss."
Himari looked away, her heart pounding. "I've... noticed some things. But I don't know what they mean. I don't want to make assumptions."
"That's fair," Gin said, his tone softening, though his gaze never wavered. "But if you've seen anything unusual, anything that might explain what's been happening, you need to speak up. This isn't just about Kaito—it's about the whole squad."
She hesitated, her mind racing with the things she had observed—the subtle changes in the squad members, the odd injuries, the uneasy tension that seemed to linger everywhere. But fear held her tongue, and she simply nodded. "I understand."
"Good," Gin said, stepping back slightly to give her space. "You're dismissed, Himari. Get some rest. And if anything comes to mind... you know where to find me."
Himari bowed quickly, murmuring a quiet acknowledgment before turning and hurrying down the hallway. Her footsteps echoed faintly as she disappeared into the shadows, leaving Gin standing alone.
He remained there for a moment, his expression unreadable as he gazed after her. Finally, he turned his attention back toward the infirmary, his smile returning, though it carried a sharper edge. "Don't hate me, kay?" He murmured.
