When I first wrote the first book in the series, I chose not to acknowledge Lena's race, primarily out of fear—fear of how readers might perceive a black protagonist, and how her identity might shape their interpretation of the story. At the time, I wasn't sure how to handle her background in a way that would feel authentic without risking negative judgment or backlash. However, as I reflect on Lena's journey and my own growth as a writer, I realize that her blackness is an essential part of who she is, and to hide that would be to rob her of a piece of her story. Lena is a black woman, and her experiences—both in the world and within her relationships—are shaped by her race. Her story is one of strength, love, and resilience, and it's time for me to honor that by embracing her identity fully and unapologetically.
